OERVIEW:  The Substitute Teacher is responsible for when a teacher is absent.  A qualified substitute is needed to carry out the educational program. As a substitute teacher, you’ll become an integral part of a school’s educational team, amplifying your teaching expertise while maximizing the learning experience for students!

An ESS substitute teacher assists with classroom instruction in the absence of a regular teacher. This person follows and teaches lesson plans, aids students in understanding subject matter, and ensures that regular classroom routines are followed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide meaningful instruction to students in assigned classrooms while the regular teacher is absent.
  • Review and implement the regular teacher's routines, procedures, lesson plans, and curriculum objectives.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment.
  • Report any student injuries, illness, and serious discipline problems to the school administration.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
  • Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.
  • Supervise students' fieldwork, internship, and research work.
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
  • Compile, administer, and grade examinations, or assign this work to others.
  • Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
  • Issues written and oral instructions; assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the school administration
  • Other duties as assigned or as become evident.

COMPETENCIES

Language, Math and Reasoning  

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in on and one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

Math Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Abilities

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and TRAINING:

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

There are no specific requirements for this position.

Excellent skills in Microsoft Windows

This position works in an environment with moderate noise level. (Examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic.)
