General Summary

To install and maintain electrical equipment during its use, construction, remodeling or repair.

Required Qualifications

1. High school graduation or equivalent.
2. Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Electrician, with a minimum of five (5) years of actual work in the trade, including apprenticeship and/or vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Electricians i.e. installing, maintaining, and/or
repairing electrical systems, generators, transformers, motors and other electrical/electronic controls, electrical switchboard and other apparatus utilizing electricity, electrical, electronic, and direct digital control systems, fire and alarm systems, and associated electrical, electronic and fiber optic equipment.
3. Valid driver's license.
4. A final candidate must complete a post-offer pre-employment physical exam. Employment is contingent on the successful result of the pre-employment physical.

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

1. Must be able to climb above 12', bend and crawl in order to gain access to or perform the work of an electrician in areas such as attics, crawl spaces, false floors, cutting poles and scaffolding.
2. Must be able to work with weights up to 40 lbs. overhead, due to the weight and placement of
construction materials such as conduit and light fixtures.
3. Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs. waist-high in order to work with typical equipment and materials such as large panels and motors.
4. Must be able to speak and hear clearly over the radio and telephone.
5. Must be able to differentiate and identify color-coded wires.
6. Must be able to work in temperature extremes, ranging from freezing weather to steam tunnels.
7. Must be able to work at heights to repair equipment located on poles (up to 120') or hung
from tall ceilings such as lights in auditoriums (20' to 30' high).
8. Must be able to work amid hazards of construction sites such as; dust, noise, animal rooms and laboratories.
9. Must be able to work in and around University substations and distribution of voltage up to
12,500 volts.

Extra Help:

Extra Help employees are only paid for hours worked and do not qualify for most benefits including health insurance and retirement, with Illinois State University. However, Extra Help employees are eligible to participate in the University's supplemental retirement savings plans (403b). Applicable retirement information is provided at the time of hire. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment. In addition, extra help employees may only work up to 900 hours total during their employment.

Extra Help employees are paid prevailing rate per the trade. They may work full-time hours (37.5 per week) throughout their employment as Extra Help, however they are not to exceed 900 hours during each Extra Help appointment.
