Job Description
SUMMARY:

The Furnace Operator is an important member of the manufacturing team and controls and operates atmospheric brazing and heat-treating furnaces. This is one of the most critical production functions at the Oklahoma City Business Unit.  The operator must be highly dependable and safety conscious.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 
  • Carefully loads parts to be furnace processed so that furnace space is optimized to achieve maximum cost efficiency and so that parts to be processed will heat uniformly.  Operator must take precautions to ensure that separate parts do not stick to each other or the racks they are place on.  Applies stop-off material to parts or puts ceramic fiber material between them to prevent sticking.
  • Places specified number of thermocouples at locations within retort that will ensure optimal temperature recording and control.  Attaches lid assembly to retort making certain that there is no leakage around O-ring seal.
  • Evacuates all ambient air from inside retort by use of vacuum roughing pump. Introduces flow of hydrogen, argon or other atmospheric gas into retort at specified flow rate. 
  • Sets electronic controls and recording equipment to specified ramp-up rates and temperatures. Monitors furnace process cycle to ensure that furnace load reaches specified temperatures.
  • Using hoist equipment lifts and moves retort for lowering into gas fired furnace.  Activates furnace controls and processes furnace load through specified furnace run cycle.
  • Reduces furnace temperature and removes retort from furnace once furnace run cycle is complete. Once furnace load has cooled to specified temperature, operator evacuates remaining atmospheric gas from retort using vacuum roughing pump. Operator removes lid assembly and parts from retort for further processing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel or crouch.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
