Job/Internship Description

The City of Takoma Park is seeking an arts and humanities intern who will assist the arts and humanities coordinator in organizing and implementing the City's wide range of arts programs. During this 12-month paid internship, the selected candidate will help organize, promote, and staff events in the , including poetry readings, film screenings, concerts, theater, and art exhibitions at the Takoma Park Community Center.

The intern also will assist with the organization and installation of in locations across Takoma Park and the graphic design of fliers, posters, and other materials.The selected candidate will work approximately 20 hours per week, typically from Mondays to Wednesdays with some telework. Work at evening or weekend events is required approximately three or four times per month.

Typical duties include:

  • Development and graphic design of various posters, fliers, vinyl wraps, etc.;
  • Development of material for weekly and monthly electronic and print newsletters;
  • Creation of social media posts and editing of graphics, video and photos;
  • Coordination of scheduled events and submitted paperwork from performers;
  • Promotion of arts events through various channels and attendance at events when needed;
  • Preparation of gallery spaces for installation of art exhibitions;
  • Routine maintenance of public art installations;
  • Research and data collection.

Minimum qualificationsinclude work experience or coursework in graphic design and arts management or a related field, such as public relations, communications, or marketing. Some graphic design experience is required.

Preferred candidatesmay have graduated with a bachelor's degree or master's degree or be enrolled in a graduate degree program with a background in successful graphic design projects. Event planning experience is a plus but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required to be successful are:

  • Graphic design skills and experience using Adobe suite, Photoshop, Canva, and other graphic design programs;
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and climb ladders and stairs;
  • Availability on most Thursday evenings and some weekends to staff arts events.

The hourly wage for this position is expected to be between $17.00 and$19.00 per hour. Please note that COVID vaccinations are now mandatory for all City staff, and will be confirmed with other pre-employment screenings once an offer has been extended.
