The Soil and Crop Scientist is primarily a hands-on laboratory scientist who can integrate across disciplines. This role: conducts experiments related to the effects of natural and synthetic soil amendments on soil fertility and crop growth; contributes to the safety and science output of a working soils laboratory which uses a wide variety of raw materials; interacts with product development teams and their leaders; and is accountable for tightly focused research which helps develop products with clearly demonstrated mechanisms which drive our company's business growth. The position is primarily visible to other researchers and product development teams.

What you will do:

  • Lead several research projects and draft formal project proposals
  • Write clear and detailed experimental protocols
  • Conduct hands-on research in the laboratory and greenhouse
  • Work side by side with shared technicians in our labs on site
  • Write protocols, implement research, analyze data, draw and share conclusions, and evaluate project success versus project goals
  • Document research in formal reports
  • Propose and modify existing soil and crop science SOPs for use in lab
  • Drive innovative solutions as a trusted subject matter expert and develop novel agronomic technologies to benefit Nutrien stakeholders
  • Stay current with relevant professional / scientific societies
  • Use applied statistics software for data analysis
  • Assume responsibility for certain analytical instruments and laboratory areas
  • Maintain assigned areas in terms of safety and compliance
  • Safety, Behavioral Standards
    • Maintain exemplary laboratories in terms of safety and compliance and follow all personal protective equipment requirements
    • Act as a leader and example for the company's Behavioral Standards, which focus on Safety, Integrity, Inclusion, Performance, Community, and Innovation

What you will bring:

  • Master's Degree required, preferably in Crop Science, Soil Science, Plant Science or a related field;Ph.D in one of the above disciplines preferred;experience may be considered in lieu education
  • 5+ years experience in agricultural research relating to crop nutrition, plant protection, soil science, crop production, or biostimulants
  • Self-motivation, assertiveness, initiative, and results orientation
  • Proficiency in technical writing and presentations
  • Excellent project planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to think creatively and solve problems
  • Ability to work independently and drive results
