Job Description

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Biostatistics is seeking a Database Designer to support MGH Biostatistics data coordinating center (DCC) activities, including multisite observational studies and randomized trials. The Database Designer will assist the existing study team(s) develop and maintain multiple complex REDCap-based studies. This will include adding new functionalities requested by study leadership and clinical investigators, collaborating with external groups to understand what is needed in electronic data capture solutions implementation, and writing comprehensive documentation.

We are looking for someone with a deep understanding of REDCap or similar electronic data capture systems, experience with complex projects (including modifying existing solutions without compromising already entered data), excellent communication skills, ability to multitask, flexibility, and the ability to work as a part of a team.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the development and maintenance of online research management systems, including several complex REDCap projects. This includes designing, coding and testing data collection tools and interfacing and communicating with domain area investigators.
  • Creating and documenting workflows and writing testing protocols.
  • Creating logical data models using best practices to ensure high data quality and reduced redundancy.
  • Collaborating with physician scientists and other clinical investigators to rapidly implement changes to the electronic data capture system.
  • Performing reverse engineering of physical data models from databases and SQL scripts.
  • Implementing data strategies, building data flows and developing conceptual data models.
  • Supporting data harmonization efforts with other established projects.
  • Developing best practices for standard naming conventions and coding practices to ensure consistency of data models.
  • Developing documentation for existing and new projects.


Bachelor's degree in Information Technology - Database Design, Applied Math, Computational Science, Health Informatics, Engineering or related technical field.


  • Strong communication skills including proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Five or more years of experience with electronic data capture systems.
  • Analytical experience including problem solving, information gathering, business to IT translation of requirements, use case development and extensive testing execution.
  • Experience with data analysis, data modeling, data integration, and data warehousing.
  • Experience developing complex instruments.
  • Experience modifying complex instruments once real data has been entered.
  • Familiarity with the command-line in Windows or Linux.
