SMECO is looking for qualified technical resources to focus on the investment, maintenance, and operations of the SMECO Electric System. We are looking for motivated electrical engineers ready to seize the opportunity to ensure SMECO is a technically strong Cooperative.

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (SMECO), headquartered in Hughesville, Maryland, is a rapidly growing transmission and distribution cooperative with about 500 employees that serves over 162,000 consumers just south of Washington, D.C. SMECO has a peak load of almost 1000 MW, assets in excess of $980 million, with over 400 miles of transmission lines serving 71 substations.

Primary Functions:

  • Directs the resources of the Transmission & Substation Operations Division in the areas of (1) Power Systems Control, Protection, and Data Acquisition (SCADA/AMI), (2) 230, 69, and 13 kV substation maintenance and operation, (3) microwave, fiber optic, licensed VHF radio, and licensed 900 MHz radio communication systems and associated multiplexing equipment, (4) 230 and 69 kV transmission system maintenance and operation, (5) revenue-class automated metering systems (AMI), and (6) transportation and power operated equipment fleet procurement and maintenance.
  • Adheres to the SMECO Internal Compliance Program (ICP).
  • Directs the overall functions of design, installation, testing, and maintenance of the Cooperative's essential communications, control, substation apparatus, and protective relaying systems.

Starting salary ranges between $129,600-$181,200. SMECO offers and excellent benefits program including a 401k 6% dollar for dollar match and additional 3% non-elective company contribution.

Required Skills

Education - Four-year college degree in electrical engineering; some power system electives preferred. Professional Engineer Certificate also required.

Required Experience

Minimum 15 years progressive work experience in electric utility systems design,
protection and control, with knowledge of relative power systems applications.
