The Los Angelesoffice of SmithGroupis looking for aLab Planner/Lab Architectto join our team.

Working with us, you will:

  • Meet with clients/users to develop or validate program requirements for laboratories and advanced technology facilities to support a wide variety of research areas.
  • Develop space programs, space lists, diagrams, guide-plates (room design criteria sheets), and physical plans working at a variety of scales.
  • Collaborate with the project team in planning the facility by developing planning grids, laboratory organization and service distribution concepts.
  • Lead the documentation of laboratory systems such as casework, laboratory equipment, and develop research, support, and collaboration spaces to create next generation settings for innovation and discovery.
  • Manage projects including negotiating project scope and fees, job production and quality, and fee management (associated with the laboratory planning scope of work).
  • Participate as needed in marketing efforts through proposal development, interview participation and presentations.
  • Develop trusting relationships with clients.
  • Mentor, provide oversight, and monitor the work performed by junior staff.
  • Establish and execute project work plan and staffing requirements.
  • Lead day-to-day construction administration activities including coordination with the contractor, owner, and consultants to maintain project progress.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and complete construction documents packages.

An ideal candidate has:

  • A bachelor's degree in Architecture or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 to 10 years of experience in programming, planning of laboratory and high-technology facilities, or delivering projects (design and construction) as an Architect.
  • LEED AP and Architectural Registration preferred.
  • Experience with academic and private / corporate research institutions required.
  • Project Architect experience in a range of project types, complexity, and scale, and is comfortable managing clients, project teams and project processes.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and data-based systems; working knowledge of Revit highly desired, along with SketchUp, Rhino and Grasshopper.
  • The ability to travel locally and regionally (Southern California).
  • Working knowledge of engineering systems; can successfully engage with professionals in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with clients and build client relationships and trust.
  • Strong mentoring, written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of code implementation and jurisdiction review.
  • Demonstrated understanding of construction practices and methodologies.
