Position Summary
 

At Stony Brook Medicine the Director of Chaplaincy is a valuable member of our team, who will have responsibility for the Chaplaincy Department. The Director of Chaplaincy Services will lead, plan, organize and manage Chaplaincy Services which meet the spiritual needs of patients, families, staff and the community. 

 

Duties of a Director of Chaplaincy may include but are not limited to the following: 

 
  • Provide leadership and direction to the Department of Spiritual Care to meet the spiritual and religious needs of patients, families and staff
  • Actively participates in the delivery of chaplaincy care, provides regular visits with patients and ensures requests for chaplaincy care are responded to in a timely manner
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure that the spiritual and ethical needs of patients, family and staff are adequately addressed
  • Develops and maintains proper administrative procedures for department in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Oversee religious activities and programs within the hospital, including religious worship, pastoral care and spiritual counseling
  • Manages chaplaincy education, orientation and training programs
  • Functions within the facilities policies and procedures for Spiritual Care
  • Represent the hospital demonstrating ICARE values in all interactions with local clergy and religious organizations 
  • Supports an interdisciplinary approach to chaplaincy care and develop positive and collaborative relationships with other departments
  •  Align chaplaincy services to support the hospital's strategic plan, programs of distinction and quality goals
  • Collaborate with Patient Experience Team and other hospital leadership in implementing Patient and Family Centered Care practices
  • Recruit, select, orient, educate, supervise and evaluate all members of the chaplaincy staff and departmental volunteers and ensure appropriate schedule coverage
  • Ensures Chaplaincy documentation meets all regulatory standards
  • Oversees the use, schedule and supplies of the Chapel
  • Demonstrate SBUH Leadership ICARE values in all interactions with staff, patients and families (Integrity, Compassion,  Accountability, Respect, Excellence)
  • Participates in programs and administrative activities of the institution
  • Participates in professional development activities
  • Performs related duties as required
 
Qualifications:
 
Required Qualifications: 
 
  • Master's degree from an accredited school of theology or divinity (ATS). Ecclesiastically endorsed from the official endorsing agency of the Chaplains faith or denomination at the time of appointment and maintain such endorsement for the duration of employment.  
  • Additional training in Clinical Pastoral Education or other hospital or counseling course (at least 2 units).
  • Previous experience of three or more years duration in hospital and/or healthcare setting with responsibilities for spiritual services programs.
  • Certification in one or more of the following: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC),National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC),  National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)
  • Ability to work with all faith traditions.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
 
  • Previous management of a CPE program
  • Specialized training in Palliative Care, Ethics/Hospice

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

 
  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 5 panel drug screen*
  • Successfully complete a Background Check investigation.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
 

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

 

*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
