Job Description

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to use your technical knowledge and expertise to join our Chemical Development team as a highly motivated process engineer at our Upper Providence site? As a member of Chemical Development, you will use your technical knowledge and expertise to scale up the process for primary manufacture and contribute to the development and deployment of state-of-the-art processes and technologies to enable the delivery of our medicines. Chemical Development supports the small molecule portfolio in GSK Pharma R&D and develops the manufacturing routes and processes that turn those molecules into medicines.
Process Engineering delivers technical knowledge and chemical engineering expertise to support the development of small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing processes at GSK.  As projects advance through development, process engineers support project teams by performing laboratory studies and developing process models to effectively transfer manufacturing processes to pilot scale.

We are seeking a chemical engineer to deliver first-principles engineering modeling work to support the scale-up of chemical processes.  The role is fast-paced and dynamic, and you will be working on multi-disciplinary teams.

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career, these responsibilities include some of the following…

  • Independently design and execute laboratory protocols and experiments for key chemical unit operations to contribute high quality chemical engineering knowledge to project teams, influencing R&D decision making.
  • Develop mechanistic process models for key chemical unit operations which demonstrate predictive capability and first-principles process understanding.  The job holder may act as an expert in specific unit operations and a functional expert in the department.
  • Initiate new research directions and novel strategies to achieve department goals.  Maintain current knowledge of external landscape and identify new scientific opportunities for Process Engineering.  May coordinate external collaborations.
  • Proactively identify scale-up risks and provide engineering solutions, making innovative contributions to the robust design and manufacture of small molecule API processes.  Suggest and implement improvements to maintain a current, state-of-the-art laboratory environment.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively on multi-disciplinary development teams, alongside Chemists, Chemical Analysts, Engineers, Modelers and Material Scientists to deliver work packages required to understand API unit operations for effective scale-up.  Influence project direction outside of main area of expertise.
  • Characterize chemical processing equipment across multiple scales and manufacturing sites, delivering key engineering knowledge for the successful scale-up of API manufacturing processes.  Anticipate potential equipment and scale-up risks and provide engineering solutions.
  • Contribute to the technical transfer of processes into a manufacturing setting, including the leadership of technical transfer activities on behalf of the discipline
  • Perform complex data management and interpretation, recording results effectively and communicating results in technical reports.  Effectively present at internal meetings. Actively participate in and lead technical reviews on projects. Independently prepare and communicate conclusions and recommendations for next steps.
  • Comply with local regulatory and data integrity requirements, including cGMP and GSK policies and procedures, with high quality and attention to one’s own safety.  May take leadership role for data integrity projects.  Provide data and technical report review for others in department.
  • Assist in new research directions and novel strategies to achieve project or department goals.

Why you?

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • BS in Chemical Engineering with 3-5 years relevant industry experience with an emphasis on developing mechanistic models for chemical processes.

  • Experience with engineering software such as Dynochem, Aspen or gPROMS

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • MS in Chemical Engineering
  • Specialized knowledge in one or more of the following areas:  reaction engineering, separation technologies, fluid dynamics, scale-up of pharmaceutical unit operations, and/or systems modeling
  • Experience in leading or contributing to multi-disciplinary pharmaceutical product development teams, with a track record of developing and communicating technical strategy for Process Engineering development work.
  • Broad knowledge of process development in support of manufacturing development.  Experience in Technical Transfer.
  • A working knowledge of Quality by Design (QbD) principles and/or a risk-based approach to pharmaceutical development
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems
  • Working knowledge of organic chemistry
