Key Responsibilities:
  • Designs proper transmission facilities and assists in the development of circuit layout for installation personnel.  Performs site reviews prior to the facility design work to determine the most practical approach to the project.
  • Assists in acceptance tests on new equipment for which design work was completed.  Makes recommendations to the technician and immediate supervisor concerning project progress and completion.
  • Conducts periodic central office equipment inventory and updates relay rack and floor space drawings.  Identifies routers and necessary components for inter-connectivity.  Evaluates systems, equipment and materials required to provide communications services.  Makes purchasing recommendations to department manager.
  • Engineers, coordinates and oversees the installation of central office equipment, transmission, remote, wireless and specialized systems (voice messaging system, test systems, etc.).  Responsible for the detailed hardware engineering and project coordination of switched and non-switched services in accordance with operational and industry standards.
  • Maintains a close working relationship with the other departments to ensure new and existing facilities are properly installed and maintained.  Works with the other engineers to analyze subscriber growth areas and determine the most effective manner to satisfy customer requirements.  Coordinates with and assists service operations department with facility assignments for the provision of services.  Provides assistance to co-workers to perform complicated or unprecedented maintenance or installation procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining the department capital and operating expenses through prudent use of company capital and material resources.  Assists department manager in the preparation of capital and expense budgets.
  • Monitors and coordinates contract installations and assists in performing acceptance testing with contractors as required by the contract.
  • Provides detailed, accurate documentation and drawings as needed to assist in project completion.  Keeps detailed records, documents and drawings of the installed circuits and all associated information.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
The work requires the knowledge and ability to:
    • Design, engineer, and oversee installation of equipment.
    • Communications networking architectures and personal computers
    • Provide detailed, accurate documentation and drawings to complete installation projects.
    • Understand the complexities involved with IP number assignments.
    • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Have good problem-solving skills and manage several projects simultaneously.
    • Knowledge of AC and DC power systems and electronics, with emphasis on safety, and the ability to calculate power requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, information technology, information systems, or related field.
  • Work experience in the computer industry with a background in networking, switch, and router design preferred.
  • Previous experience in the telecommunications industry is a plus.
