Job Description
Vernadero Group Incorporated (Vernadero), a veteran-owned small business, is seeking a Staff Botanist. The Staff Botanist will be responsible for rare plant surveys, floral inventories, monitoring, vegetation community mapping, and habitat restoration management support, primarily in California. The self-directed individual will work with other botanists and biologists on teams and at times, alone, conducting surveys and monitoring. The Staff Botanist will also be responsible for contributing to data collection methodology development, data management and analysis, and report writing.

Specific job responsibilities of the Staff Botanist include conducting general comprehensive vegetation surveys, vegetation community mapping, general sensitive species vegetation surveys, and species-specific rare plant surveys; monitoring habitat restoration projects and supporting habitat restoration management; and contributing to the preparation of biological technical reports including survey reports, habitat restoration plans, Biological Assessments; developing Integrated Natural Resource Management Plans; and preparing biological resource sections for NEPA documents.

Required Qualifications:
  • At least a Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in ecology, botany or a related science; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of the flora of southern California.
  • Capable of utilizing a dichotomous key to identify flora.
  • Ability to pass a background check and obtain government security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to travel nationwide.
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license and ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle.
  • Must be able to walk 5 to 7 miles per day with day pack, water, and supplies in variable weather conditions.
  • Ability to collect field data using handheld GPS devices, maps, mobile data collection methods (such as smart phone data entry), or other techniques.
  • Ability to follow established protocols, but also apply subsampling techniques to fit site specific field conditions and project needs.
  • Capable of contributing to data management, data analysis, data presentation, and report writing.
Working Conditions and Requirements
  • Working conditions are frequently at outdoor field locations; physically demanding work efforts will often be required. The normal work week is Monday through Friday. Availability to work outside of the normal work week and schedule flexibility may occasionally be required.
  • This position works out of Southern California, preferably either San Diego or Orange County. This is a fully remote position without a requirement to report to a specific office location.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and have an ability to pass and maintain a security clearance.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience with Federal agency programs and projects.
  • Working knowledge of Geographic Information System technology used in the management of natural resources.
  • Experience with data management in Microsoft Excel and/or Microsoft Access.
  • Experience with statistical software packages.
  • Trained CRAM practitioner.
