Job Description
Celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2022, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs is where your world and the world meet. The Council is a nonpartisan, non-profit organization that empowers more people to help shape our global future. Through content and engagement experiences that offer diverse, fact-based perspectives and in-depth analysis, we foster dialogue on the world’s most critical issues. We are committed to building an inclusive community of globally conscious people who want to actively participate in global affairs and gain the knowledge that can help them make a tangible impact – big or small – in the world.

As the Council enters its second century, we are embarking on an ambitious digital transformation and are growing our Digital Content team to reach and engage more people in Chicago and beyond.

The Role
The Chicago Council on Global Affairs is seeking a writer-editor to create copy across a range of global affairs-related subjects.

The ideal candidate will enjoy writing engaging copy on human interest, policy, and global events, with some experience in text for newsletters, social, and web. Optimizing reach, engagement, and audience loyalty is a top priority, and knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), tagging, and linking are preferable.

This is a collaborative, hands-on team looking for an enthusiastic writer-editor who is proactive and enjoys writing to deadlines.

The position is a hybrid role and requires periodic in-person attendance at our Downtown Chicago location based on work activities and peak seasons. The position reports to the Digital Content Editor.

  • Deploy photos, videos, social media, graphics, and links to drive engagement; platforms could include YouTube, Drupal, or other social media sites.
  • Use data and analytics to help guide editorial and audience development.
  • Take a forward-thinking approach to testing new content and engagement ideas intended to build a diverse audience.
  • Participate collaboratively with the Content team’s diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies.
  • Work with marketing, design, and product teams to optimize reach, loyalty, and engagement.
  • Foster cross-team collaborations in support of the Council’s digital transformation objectives and goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Provide support at Council events approximately 3–4 times monthly (registration, ushering, etc.), requiring some evening and early morning hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Preferably a minimum of 2-5 years’ experience in a newsroom or journalistic environment working with text for web, newsletter, and social.
  • Keen journalistic instincts and skills, with a track record in multi-platform storytelling skills (e.g., web, newsletter, social).
  • Comfortable in the use of digital publishing and CMS, keen to adopt and develop the best innovations in this field. Drupal experience preferred.
  • Some familiarity with interpreting web analytics and common platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Sprout Social, etc.) to adapt and improve audience engagement
  • Collaborative, with proactive and inclusive interpersonal and communication skills
  • Results-driven, prioritizing for best and timely results.
  • Ability to work evening and early morning programs.
