Job Description

The Content Strategist develops content for use across UFCW’s social media platforms and websites. This role has significant responsibility for finding new and creative ways to use video, graphics, and text to express UFCW’s brand, voice, and message on both public and private platforms. The Content Strategist will also develop content with the goal in mind of expanding the union’s online influence and engagement among our members and our industries (retail, grocery, meatpacking, distillery, and others). This position is on-site and based in Washington DC.


This position reports to the Assistant Director of Communications, Digital and will work in our DC office.
Work requires limited travel and/or irregular or unpredictable hours.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Creates original content for UFCW social media platforms and UFCW websites that engages and grows our audience.
  • Manages social media content calendar and day-to-day online community engagement, including monitoring local unions and labor-related social media channels. Assists with executing paid social media campaigns as needed.
  • In collaboration with the Communications Department’s graphic designer, collects content and creates graphics, videos, and other media for internal and external communications. 
  • Monitors the performance of UFCW’s digital channels and produces regular social listening and website analytics reports with actionable insights and recommendations for improving audience engagement. Develops and tests new content to meet measurable goals.
  • Assists with creative strategy and long-term planning for communications campaigns in support of UFCW’s strategic goals. 
  • Develops guides and training materials to help spread best practices for digital communications to Local Unions.
  • Keeps track of social trends and determines the best way to craft tailored posts for different social media channels.
  • Provides communications support for UFCW conferences, International Executive Board Meetings, and other work-sponsored and related events, including, but not limited to: writing speeches and remarks, developing visual materials and presentations as directed, staffing rehearsals, and providing logistical support.
  • Assists in managing and executing member communications programs (email and blast text).
Duties, responsibilities and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned at any time, in the UFCW’s discretion.  UFCW employees function as a team and, occasionally, and on a temporary basis, employees may be required to perform tasks usually performed by others. This might occur if a team member is absent or unavailable to complete a project and the team is responsible for the deadline. Because employees are required to work as a team, you are required to step up and fill in for a team member who is absent or needs assistance from time to time.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of experience in digital communications or social media strategy.
  • Experience writing, designing, and editing content for public audiences.  
  • Fluency working with social media platforms and digital means of communications (websites, texting, online, email, video, etc.) and eagerness to adapt to the latest trends.
  • Is committed to learning and enjoys personal professional development. Self-starter, good at identifying opportunities to improve their work and their organizations’ reach.
  • Proficiency in software programs and online tools including Wordpress, Google Analytics, Sprout Social (or other social media content management tools). Deep understanding of social media analytics and KPIs (Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics).  Fluency in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite, with a focus on InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop strongly preferred. Familiarity with HTML, CSS and JavaScript is a plus.
  • Fluency working with social media platforms and digital means of communications (websites, texting, online, email, video, etc.) and eagerness to adapt to the latest trends.
  • Must be a team player, with a positive attitude, who enjoys collaborative work environments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Good eye for graphic design (extensive design experience not required)
  • Experience with digital marketing and SEO a plus.
  • Spanish language proficiency a plus.
