Job Description
Join our team who is committed to the delivery of the highest quality health care service. We are seeking a part-time WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor  that is self-motivated, energetic, and a take charge individual.

Responsibilities:
 
  1. Successfully attends and completes the Wisconsin WIC Peer Counselor Breastfeeding Training within 12 months of hire.
  2. Counsels and supports WIC pregnant and breastfeeding women by telephone, text message, and in person either individually or in a group setting.
  3. Offers basic breastfeeding information and support to all expectant and new WIC mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, getting a good start with breastfeeding, and helping them prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
  4. Respects each client by keeping her information confidential.
  5. Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC clients.
  6. Documents accordingly in the WIC participant’s care plan in ROSIE as directed.
  7. Refers mothers when needs present beyond the Peer Counselor scope, according to clinic-established protocols to:
  • WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator or Nutritionist.
  • The mother’s physician or nurse.
  • Public health programs in the community.
  • Social service agencies.
  1. Facilitates groups and completes related ROSIE documentation. Initiates group reminder contacts by phone or text.
  2. Assists WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator or Nutritionist with breastfeeding support when needed.
  3. Participates in community outreach for breastfeeding promotion at offsite locations as needed.
  4. Attends and is actively engaged in weekly WIC staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
  5. Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator or the supervisor. 
  6. May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.
  7. Assists with breast pump distribution under the direction of the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator or Nutritionist.  Instructs women on the use of the breast pumps and on the proper handling of breast milk.
  8. Cleans and performs suction test on multi-user breast pumps upon return.
  9. Available by agency provided cell phone outside clinic hours and environment for contact by breastfeeding participants according to Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Outside of Clinic Availability policy and procedures.
  10. Utilizes and cares for peer equipment per policy including agency issued cell phone, laptop, camera, and other items.
Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Meets definition of paraprofessional as outlined by State WIC Policy.
  3. Meets definition of peer to WIC mothers as outlined by State WIC Policy.
  4. Previous experience with breastfeeding, having breastfeed at least one baby for a minimum of 6 months with the last 7 years of being hired.
  5. Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.
  6. Must obtain at least 25 hours of breastfeeding continuing professional education every 5 years.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups.
  8. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  9. Ability to relate well to people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  10. Bilingual (Spanish/English, Burmese/English, Rohingya/English) preferred.
