Position Description: The Remote Sensing Analyst will work as part of the RedCastle Resources team in one of our locations in Salt Lake City, Utah or Fort Collins, Colorado working on land cover mapping, land cover change, UAS data collection and analysis, forest health indicators and disturbance mapping, and terrestrial ecological unit mapping using high-to-moderate resolution imagery, lidar, and other data sources for the USDA Forest Service or other related governmental agency. The successful candidate will develop and apply image processing and GIS methods to landscape-level land cover and ecological mapping tasks integrating information from imagery terrain, climate, and other geospatial layers along with field sampled data to develop thematic maps. This individual may occasionally develop and deliver remote sensing and GIS training to adult learners. Training course examples include multispectral imagery analysis, change detection, lidar data analysis, object-based feature extraction, multi-stage sampling design, data mining, and others. The applicant should be proficient using multispectral imagery, automated pixel and object-oriented image classification techniques, spatial modeling, statistical analysis, and data mining tools. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on projects ranging from base-level to broad-scale projects. Occasional field work or travel is required.
The following characteristics are desirable:
Personal and professional interest in natural resources and the application of geospatial technologies to resource management problems;
Experience with mapping software, particularly Google Earth Engine (GEE), eCognition, ERDAS, ArcGIS, and R;
Experience or coursework in Python, JavaScript, and associated geospatial and data analysis libraries;
Background in ecology, forestry, geography, or natural resource management area with knowledge of landscape ecology, vegetation, and field data collection methods;
Good communication skills including demonstrated technical writing and verbal communication;
Willingness, aptitude, and skills to successfully teach complex information to adult learners;
Successful candidates should be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, be able to work independently, be able to collaborate with resource specialists, and be adaptable to changing client priorities.
Education and Experience: The successful candidate will have 5 years of experience in remote sensing with good current working knowledge of geospatial software as described above. The minimum degree requirement is a BA/BS (preferably a MA/MS) in a natural resource or technical area such as forestry, biology, soils, geography/GIS, or ecology, with coursework in geospatial technologies.
