Job Description

The Material Scientist position is a critical role within the Surgical RD&E team. This position requires technical leadership skills and cross-functional teamwork. He or she will be the polymer material expert to support major RD&E projects in developing, identifying, and defining material specifications.

In this role the Materials Scientist will be required to manage multiple projects according to project management principles and maintain compliance to regulatory and quality systems. This position requires a detail-orientated individual with technical hands-on skills as well as good communication skills (verbal and written). Willingness to work with cross-functional team members including Clients, RD&E, Manufacturing, and Quality to achieve objectives.

What you will do

  • Conduct research on the structures and properties of polymer materials to obtain information that could be used to develop new products or enhance existing ones.
  • Prepare scientific or technical reports or presentations supporting all facets of the business.
  • Plan laboratory experiments to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques used in the production of materials having special characteristics.
  • Determine ways to strengthen or combine materials or develop new materials with new or specific properties for use in a variety of products and applications.
  • Develop and/or support new or advanced products or production methods.
  • Subject matter expert supporting RD&E, manufacturing, procurement, and marketing.
  • Devise testing methods to evaluate the effects of various conditions on specific materials.
  • Research methods of processing materials to develop such products as patient and equipment drapes.
  • Collaborate with clients to determine how to tailor materials to meet their needs.
  • Recommend materials for reliable performance in various environments.
  • Advise others on the development or use of new technologies.
  • Identify test methods and performance criteria to ensure that manufacturer and governmental quality and safety standards are met.
  • Test materials to determine conformance to specifications of mechanical strength, strength-weight ratio, ductility, magnetic and electrical properties, and resistance to abrasion, corrosion, heat, and cold.
  • Evaluate material and product failures to identify root cause and solutions to mitigate failures.
  • Test quality of materials or finished products.
  • Identify suppliers of materials and review for addition to ASL.
  • Develop material specifications and performance criteria.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in materials science (or equivalent work experience) with focus on polymers
  • 8+ years developing material specifications in an R&D environment
  • 4+ years working in a regulated industry
  • Experience writing technical documentation, including material specifications, protocols, and reports
  • Experience working with polymer film processing, pressure sensitive adhesive components and other medical device materials
  • Experience interpreting test data and reporting findings
  • Experience identifying and defining acceptance criteria
  • Experience creating/reviewing finished goods specifications
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams as technical specialist
  • Experience leading major projects with critical deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven ability to independently manage and execute objectives
  • Knowledge of injection molding process
  • Knowledge in medical device manufacturing utilizing polymer films
  • Experience in coaching and developing team members
  • Client relationship experience
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a cross-functional team
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Word
  • Experienced working in test lab environment maintaining GLP compliance
  • Experience working within a regulated environment, preferably medical device Class 1 Disposable Medical Device Product Development and/or production
