Our History
Our humble beginnings started with a conversation between a doctor and a 12 year-old patient in the late 1930’s. Dr. Douglas Gibson, the first orthopedist in Des Moines, asked John Kelly what he wanted to be when he grew up.  After hearing that John wanted to be a doctor, Dr. Gibson suggested he study orthopedics and join him in practice when he completed his training. In 1955, John Kelley, M.D. joined Dr. Gibson and together they founded Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons (DMOS).

Over the past 60-plus years, DMOS Orthopaedic Centers has evolved into multi-faceted orthopedic specialty centers in the heart of Central Iowa. Our core beliefs and traditions have remained cemented in the dedication and caring for our patients. Our doctors have advanced training in their respective specialties
All of our doctors are Board Certified or Board Eligible. Additionally, our Physician Assistants and Physical & Hand Therapy teams are the best in their field which allows DMOS to be the preferred choice for comprehensive orthopedic care in central Iowa.
