What Success Looks Like In This Job

 Civil Engineer I: Under direction, performs professional engineering work development and/or review of roadway designs, utility plans, drainage reports, stormwater quality plans, performing bridge analysis and design computations, and other various related design elements associated with public transportation infrastructure and facilities. This position may also participate in the review of engineering submittals associated with public and private improvements within the county for compliance with applicable standards and regulations. This position will require structural engineering and detailing techniques, performing bridge inspections, writing bridge condition reports, and preparing bridge load rating computations. The types of projects include the design and detailing of bridges, walls, and box culverts for transportation projects.

 
 Civil Engineer II: In addition to the duties of a Civil Engineer I this position may design engineering projects.
 
 Civil Engineer III: Performs professional and complex engineering work involving all the professional components above, as well as environmental assessment studies for its compliance with local, state, and federal standards and regulations; designs and manages capital improvements projects, prepares engineering plans, specifications, and construction bids.
 
 The Department has elected to consider a range of experience for this vacancy. A candidates' qualifications will determine the level at which they are hired.
 
 Civil Engineer I:  $64,941.36 - $90,917.90
 Civil Engineer II: $72,968.11 - $102,155.35
 Civil Engineer III: $86,906.18 - $121,668.66

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, and supervise professional and technical engineering services.
  • Participate in the selection of professional and technical engineering sta?; provide or coordinate sta? training.
  • Prepare various reports on transportation engineering operations and activities. Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing current development review and design engineering services; implement policies and procedures as directed.
  • Oversee and participate in the preparation of plans, speci?cations, cost and quantity estimates, and bid documents for Transportation construction projects; oversee the planning, design, and construction of capital improvement projects.
  • Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; monitor and control expenditures.
  • Coordinate and prioritize design projects with other county departments and other relevant agencies.
  • Manage consultant contracts for transportation projects.
  • Manage engineering design and construction contracts with outside consultants for public improvements including progress of the work, cost reports, and approval of payment for work accomplished.
  • Oversee the maintenance of o?ce records, maps, construction project documents, and related records.
  • Attend Board of County Commissioners, and other public meetings.
  • Resolve or justify controversial and complex technical problems.
  • Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary to resolve complaints.
  • Assist in applications for federal, state, and local grant funding.
  • Exercise professional engineering judgment in accordance with current accepted practice of civil engineering and appropriate laws, regulations, and codes.  
  • Prepare requests for proposals and participate in selecting consultants for assigned projects.
  • Review and evaluate permit requests for overweight vehicles to cross county bridge structures.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications for Success

  • Possess knowledge of and be able to apply principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise the work of professional and technical sta? or consultants 
  • Utilize terminology, methods, practices, and techniques used in technical civil engineering report preparation.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of pertinent Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations including civil engineering laws and regulations.
  • Resolve regulatory, public relations and system design questions.
  • Utilize terminology, methods, practices, and techniques used in technical civil engineering report preparation.
  • Apply principles and practices of budget preparation and control.
  • Manage large and complex engineering projects, including the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Conduct comprehensive engineering studies and develop appropriate recommendations.
  • Prepare and maintain technical civil engineering records and prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Develop, review, and modify civil engineering plans, designs, and speci?cations.
  • Exercise professional engineering judgment to achieve results consistent with objectives.
  • Pro?cient in AutoCAD and other specialized software. Ability to work as a team member.
  • Experience using structural analysis programs and bridge design software. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ensure project compliance with appropriate federal, state, and local rules, laws, and regulations.
  • Perform technical research and solve multi-disciplinary engineering problems. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

More Qualifications for Success

Experience:

  1. Civil Engineer I: One (1) year of related professional Civil Engineering experience. 
  2. Civil Engineer II: Minimum of four (4) years of increasingly responsible professional civil engineering experience.
  3. Civil Engineer III: Minimum of six (6) years of increasingly responsible professional civil engineering experience.
 
Education and Training: 
  1. Civil Engineer I-III: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.
License or Certificates: 
  1. Civil Engineer I: Possession of an Engineering Intern (EI) certification preferred.
  2. Civil Engineer II: Possession of an Engineer Intern (EI) certification.
  3. Civil Engineer III: Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Colorado is required.
Background Check: Must pass a criminal (CBI) background check.
Other: Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License
