Position overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking an intern for an exciting project developing X-ray spectroscopy data management tools at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The successful candidate will establish a centralized repository of reference spectral data for transition-metal X-ray absorption (XAS) and X-ray emission (XES) spectroscopies at the LCLS. The database will provide accurate and relevant reference data to LCLS users, enabling them to make informed decisions during their experiments.

Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible summer internship position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more), not to exceed 980 hours. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age and currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated and have US work authorization. All accepted candidates must have or be able to timely acquire US work authorization. A minimum commitment requested is 12 weeks.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and design a strongly normalized relational database to centralize and store LCLS-derived spectroscopic data.
• Populate the database by soliciting spectroscopic data from users and staff or digitizing permitted published data.
• Create a python library to interface with the database through high performance computing clusters.
• Collaborate with the LCLS user community to gather requirements and ensure the database meets their needs.
• Develop user and programmer interfaces to enable access by the wider X-ray community.
• Utilize skills in Bash scripting, Python coding, relational database design, and database normalization.
• Understand X-ray spectroscopic data and contribute to the improvement of the decision-making process for users.

• Working towards a degree in computer science, Data Science, Physics, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, or a related field.

The expected pay range for this position is $22.00 to $25.00 per hour. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
