Job Description
The Chicago Council on Global Affairs is where your world and the world meet. The Council is a nonpartisan, non-profit organization that empowers more people to help shape our global future. We are launching an editorial startup team to connect with the next generation of changemakers who want to create a more open and promising world for all. By informing them, inspiring them, and involving them in world affairs, we will support an inclusive community of globally conscious people who want to have a tangible impact. The Council celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2022. Do you want to help shape our next century?

The Role

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs is seeking an audience producer to help the next generation of changemakers grow their involvement in the world through our publishing, programming, and public engagement.

The audience producer is equally skilled at crafting creative content for Instagram, optimizing website headlines and newsletter subject lines, applying actionable insights on SEO, and tracking analytics to inform decision-making. The person in this role will support strategies that maximize our reach while finding ways to meaningfully invite communities to engage with the Council in creating a more open world. The ideal candidate will have a track record of success in understanding and reaching diverse audiences, ideally by growing newsletter subscribers and social platform reach for greater loyalty.

The position is a hybrid role and requires occasional in-person attendance at our Downtown Chicago location based on work activities and peak seasons. The position reports to the Audience Editor.

  Who you are:

You are a journalist who uses social feeds to write, edit and report the news for different audiences with different needs.
  • You have an eye for shareable headlines, strong quotes and eyebrow-raising data points.
  • You love a challenge and are relentlessly curious about how to interest people in the important global events of the day.
  • You thrive in a collaborative, hands-on team.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Attracting new audiences and deepening engagement with them, including through search, social, and email, by executing growth strategies and supporting the team’s best practices for community cultivation and engagement.
  • Listening — online and off – to identify social conversations and rising search trends that are developing (or will be soon) around global topics, and translating those insights into actionable next steps.
  • Explaining and humanizing global interests for social understanding and utilizing best practices for sharing out on social platforms.
  • Crafting, producing, posting, and scheduling content designed for social channels, in particular Instagram, and creating graphics, GIFs, quote cards, and other materials.
  • Responding to readers and engaging across platforms, including platforms such as Reddit.
  • Updating analytics scorecards, monitoring dashboards, and identifying opportunities to deepen our understanding of the current audience and expand our future audience.
  • Maximizing search engine optimization by workshopping SEO-optimized headlines, descriptions, and tags.
  • Optimizing newsletter products for audience growth.
  • Taking a forward-looking, lab-like approach to testing new content and engagement ideas intended to build a diverse audience.
  • Working across the team and organization to generate and implement new ideas for audience growth and engagement.
  • Participating in the team’s diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies.
  • Fostering cross-team collaborations in support of the Council’s digital transformation objectives and goals.
  • Provide support for Council events (virtual, hybrid, or in-person), sometimes requiring early morning or evening hours. Examples may be registrations, ushering, greeting, monitoring social media channels, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, is preferred
  • 1-2 years proven track record in supporting audience growth, preferably in a journalistic environment
  • Proficiency in using Web analytics tools, including Google and Chartbeat, to grow audience
  • Fluency in using social platform native analytics and related social monitoring and analytics tools, including Google Analytics, to grow audience
  • Experience using graphic design and video editing software
