The is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to join the Macaulay Library team.


We are seeking a motivated software engineer to work collaboratively to develop public-facing tools and advance machine learning projects by working on crucial engineering that incorporates model research, managing datasets, training models, and integrating models into production software.


This role will develop machine learning tools in Merlin Bird ID, a mobile application that helps millions of people worldwide identify birds using automated detection and classification of birds in images, audio, and video.


What You Will Do

As the Machine Learning Engineer, you will be expected to:

  • build, organize, and maintain datasets and software needed to train models and integrate trained models into mobile and web applications,
  • utilize software development tools, team code repositories, and open-source libraries,
  • understand full stack development strategy and recommend solutions for project requirements and
  • stay current on software development and advances in machine learning.

This is a full-time position located in Ithaca, New York.


What We Need from You

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with 3-7 years of relevant work experience.
  • A thorough understanding of object-oriented programming and modern application development techniques.
  • Minimum 3 years Python experience; knowledge of numpy, pandas, matplotlib; familiarity with Tensorflow or Pytorch.
  • Minimum 3 years experience working with datasets from Python, including reading and writing the following file formats: json, csv, pickle, npz, hd5; experience with Jupyter notebooks.
  • Minimum 3 years Linux command line experience; ery comfortable with ssh, scp, rsync, parallel.
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure. Experience with databases, both sql and non-sql.

You should have experience building frontend user interfaces and integrating with APIs and web services. Proven experience documenting and testing code with demonstrable skills in problem solving and critical thinking. Experience using software development, deployment and project management tools.

We would view these additional qualifications as incredibly helpful in this role:

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Experience with Java, Spring, JSP, Postgres, JavaScript, JavaScript UI libraries and frameworks (such as React, Angular, or Vue), ELK, Docker.
  • Experience with mobile application development such as Swift, Objective-C, Java, and/or Kotlin.
  • Prior use and understanding of Merlin, eBird, or other Cornell Lab tools and resources.
  • Interest in birds, nature, conservation, and/or natural science.
