The Mechanical Engineer is an essential, valued member of our Building Engineering Services (BES) staff directly responsible for creating a major portion of our project deliverables. The ability to work as part of a collaborative team across multiple time zones is a must. This position requires a self-motivated, creative, and innovative professional and offers expanding responsibility and growth potential. The Mechanical Engineer works as part of a collaborative, nationwide team creating system designs that enhance the working environments of our clients.

The Mechanical Engineer reports to the Mechanical Section Manager.

Typical Work Tasks / Duties
  • Manage CAD/BIM design staff and junior engineers on various project task work
  • Assist Marketing and Business Development groups in developing fee proposals and scope of work documents for HVAC, Plumbing, and Industrial Process Equipment scopes of work
  • Attend internal and external project coordination meetings
  • Selection, coordination, and layout of HVAC and Plumbing systems and equipment as a part of assisting architects, engineers, and end users in the design of various facilities
  • Selection, coordination, and layout of Industrial Process Equipment systems for maintenance facilities including but not limited to compressed air systems, vehicle exhaust systems, and vehicle lubrication storage and distribution systems
  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations
  • Develop control diagrams and sequences to establish operation of building systems
  • Technical report writing
  • Development of project specifications
  • Construction document development and modification
  • Mentor, organize, and motivate junior staff
  • QC and review construction documents
  • Design support during construction including field observations, submittal & shop drawing review, Request For Information (RFI) support
  • Other design / engineering tasks as assigned
  • Travel: Some travel to job sites or other HDR offices could be required. This would be communicated in advance to give adequate coordination time with project work and personal life
  • Facility Assessment type work often becomes available on an as-needed basis from the various business groups. Assessments can range from a few days to several weeks. These types of assignments are not a requirement, but can be available depending on employee interest and qualifications
Professional Development
  • Active participation in industry organizations is encouraged.
  • Additional industry certifications are also encouraged (LEED AP, CDT, CEM, etc.).

Qualifications Qualifications Required Academic / Experience Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with a Mechanical emphasis.
  • Minimum of 5 years' industry experience in HVAC and Plumbing systems coordination and design.
  • Experience in commercial, industrial and/or institutional facilities.
  • Successful completion of P.E. exam
Technical
  • Ability to act as the lead mechanical/plumbing engineer on smaller and mid-sized projects with the goal of advancing to the discipline lead on projects of all types and sizes
  • Working knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD
  • Command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Working knowledge of Trane Trace 700, Trane Trace 3D Plus or similar load analysis software
  • Technical and specification writing skills
  • Working knowledge of current industry codes and standards
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to effectively work on multiple projects simultaneously
Preferred Skills - Applicable But Not a Requirement
  • Experience in Federal, data center, civic, and/or healthcare facilities.
  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam Revu
  • Working knowledge of Newforma Project Center and ProjectWise Document Management Software
  • Energy modeling/buidling energy use assessments
  • LEED or other sustainability accreditations
  • NCEES registration
Physical Requirements
  • General: Required to talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms
  • Tolerance: Able to sit or stand in front of computer or other equipment for extended periods of time.
  • Vision: Close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

The expected compensation range for this position is $$79,464.00 - $113,520.00 annually depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions. Temporary and part-time roles eligible for limited benefits.
