Job Description

The Applied Aviation Sciences Department of the College of Aviation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Daytona Beach, FL invites applications to apply for a tenure-track (preferred) or non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Aerospace and Occupational Safety to begin August 2023 or earlier.

Teaching assignments may include, but are not limited to undergraduate and graduate courses in occupational safety and/or aviation safety/accident investigation, and related areas supporting the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Aerospace and Occupational Safety and the Master of Science in Aviation (MSAv).

The position includes a mix of teaching, research, and service obligations. The candidate must possess effective teaching skills at the undergraduate level, including the ability to relate theory to application through experiential learning. Basic teaching requirements for tenure-track faculty are nine undergraduate credit hours (three courses) per semester. Basic teaching load for non-tenure track appointments is 12 undergraduate credit hours (four courses) per semester. The candidate is expected to develop new course materials as well as teach previously developed courses.

Tenure-track faculty are expected to pursue moderate scholarly research activities with the possibility of additional workload reassignment for funded research, and to participate in individual and group research projects involving students.

Service duties may include student mentorship, curriculum evaluation and assessment, committee participation, and project leadership.

The Applied Aviation Sciences Department offers four bachelor's degree programs, each unique: Aerospace and Occupational Safety, Air Traffic Management, Meteorology, and Spaceflight Operations. While each program is different from the others, all are excellent choices for students who want challenging and rewarding careers. Aerospace and Occupational Safety (AOS) gives students opportunities to gain the knowledge and the expertise needed to address safety concerns in aviation, aerospace operations, as well as most occupations and industries across the globe. Graduates of the AOS program have gone on to fill key occupational safety management roles in the public and private sectors.

Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have a doctorate degree in Occupational Safety, Occupational Health, Public Health, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Aviation (safety focus), or closely related discipline specializing in the aviation industry. Students nearing the completion of their doctorate (within one year) are also encouraged to apply for a tenure-track appointment.

Individuals with an M.S. in a safety-related field and extensive aviation safety experience may apply for a non-tenure-track appointment. Prior workplace experience managing a safety function, and/or risk management is desired. Experience in the aviation or aerospace sector is highly desired. Demonstrated or potential excellence in teaching, research, service, and mentoring undergraduate students is desired. CSP, CIH, SHI and/or SMS preferred.

Applications will be reviewed immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Interested individuals should submit a letter of application clearly showing they meet the minimum qualifications, a current curriculum vitae, and a combined statement of teaching and research interests.
