Are you a mechanical engineer who enjoys designing equipment, structures, and machinery? Do you like using your imagination combined with your knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals to come up with creative solutions that help make innovative new technologies a reality? Do you see yourself working in an exciting, energizing, fast-paced workplace dedicated to fighting climate change, making the energy transition a reality, and improving the lives of people around the world? If so, then the Career Development Program at Air Products is the place you have been looking for.
The Air Products Career Development Program (CDP) is looking for PhDs in mechanical or materials engineering who understand a wide breadth of mechanical engineering fundamentals and love to apply this knowledge in creative ways to model, design, and test equipment, structures, and/or machinery for new technologies and processes and optimization of existing designs. The CDP program presents the incumbents with three different assignments around the company. Two of the assignments are chosen at the discretion of the incumbent, allowing the incumbent to design their own career path and explore the company's options before settling down into a more permanent role. The program also provides the incumbent with extensive networking opportunities, building a solid platform for future success.
We are seeking candidates with an emphasis in the applications of traditional fundamental engineering skills and a mix of experimental, computational, and theoretical focus in their schooling. A candidate with a wide breadth of knowledge and ability to increase depth of expertise on a variety of subjects as needed is important. Existing areas of expertise should include at least several of the following:
Mechanical design
Structural Analysis
Fatigue and Fracture mechanics
Dynamics and vibrations
Metal processing / fabrication technologies
Failure analysis
High temperature creep
Design of experimental equipment
Fluid mechanics/heat transfer
We have a wide variety of challenging opportunities ranging from fundamental and exploratory research to highly innovative processes & products development. Air Products teams use theoretical and experimental approaches in new products, process technology, and applications development. Experimental investigations are carried out at the laboratory, pilot plant, and commercial scale, at both Air Products and customer sites. Length of a single project can vary from several months to the full length of the CDP assignment and beyond, and the CDP may work on several projects during the course of an assignment.
While no pre-existing knowledge of specific processes, software, or fabrication methods is required, the candidate will be expected to learn them as needed for specific projects. To that end, the following skills will be beneficial:
Understanding of adsorption, distillation, or hydrogen production processes
Experience with 3D CAD software including solid modeling
Knowledge of machining techniques, fabrication methods and welding processes
Experience with pressure vessel and piping codes, including design-by-analysis methods
Experience working with vendors on prototype and initial mechanical designs
Qualifications:
B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, and pursuing a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, or has completed a PhD.
Completing Ph.D. studies and defense no later than September 2023
Able to travel both domestically and internationally
Locations: US-PA-Allentown
