Position Summary:

We are looking for a beverage scientist to provide technical expertise and be responsible for the development of new plant-based beverage products and bases from concept to commercialization for beverage core innovation, renovation, cost optimization and quality initiatives. This individual will work collaboratively with cross-functional partners to design and execute projects with a goal to be on the forefront of innovative product development or capabilities that unleash brand potential. The individual must possess a strong sense of curiosity of the technical principles related to plant-based beverages as well as effectively apply that knowledge towards improving upon existing products across the company. Top candidates will be team players and be passionate about product development.

Essential Functions:

  • High degree of technical competence, with a "self-starting" motivation to demonstrate, maintain, and develop extensive knowledge of ingredients and food systems related to plant-based products, specifically beverages.
  • Lead or support selected Product Development and Commercialization projects for key Plant-based Beverage initiatives based on business priorities with a strong focus on technical rigor and consumer needs by executing benchtop, pilot plant and production scale trials in a timely manner. This will support innovation, renovation, business continuity, and productivity.
  • Work to become an additional subject matter expert on the plant-based beverage team across the Campbell Meals & Beverage division, eventually expanding to other plant-based technologies that support the overall division needs.
  • Ability to be flexible and resilient while remaining positive to shifting business needs.
  • Effective creative problem-solving skills and troubleshooting experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Self-motivated desire to research and support technical projects including literature search and review, competitive product review and contact with industry experts.
  • Active participation in and contributes to a team environment in which all members share information and support departmental priorities.
  • Leverage and recommend vendor capabilities and/or collaborate with our internal technical team, where appropriate, to expand formulation possibilities, research new ingredients, develop unique product or technologies for innovation and/or increase speed to market with respect to Plant-based Beverages.
  • Partner with Sensory and Consumer Insights to gain consumer insight to inform product proposition, design, and desired claims. Develop prototypes to support concept and ideation exploratory work based upon consumer direction.
  • Supervisory responsibilities: This position is not supervisory in nature. This is an individual contributor role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experienced in commercializing plant-based beverages or plant-protein products using aseptic filling technologies in a manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.
  • Passionate about your work, but also the grace to listen and integrate constructive feedback.
  • Computer skills including basic fluency in Microsoft Office-Word, Excel, Teams, etc.as well as ingredient/formula database and internet tools highly preferred
  • Strong planning and organizing skills
  • The ability and interest to work in laboratory, pilot plant, and manufacturing scale environments
  • Knowledge of scientific method and ability to review, evaluate and implement into a technical plan for executing projects
  • Ability to work with ambiguity and seek creative solutions with a "can do attitude"
  • Highly effective team player, willing to contribute to a wide variety of areas.
  • Good oral and written communications as well as presentation skills are required.
  • Capable to walk or stand up for three-quarters of the workday both in the lab/office and remotely
  • Physical ability to lift weight of approximately 30 lbs.
  • Travel required up to 25%.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent specializing in Food Science, Culinology, or related field and 1 - 3 years of relevant experience in a food manufacturing setting, OR
  • Master's degree in Food Science or related field desired with a minimum of 1 year of experience
  • Ideal candidate will have both food science knowledge and culinary experience.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed during the day in a Pacific Foods office, R&D kitchens, pilot plant, and/or manufacturing plants (Pacific, CSC, co-packer, and vendor). The work exposes the employee to heat and hot food products as well as tree nuts, soy, gluten, and seeds. Personal protective gear and equipment is required. Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms up to 75% of the day. Must be able to frequently lift up to 30 pounds. Some overtime may be required.
