Description

The Diagnostic Medical Physicist II reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Diagnostic Medical Physicist II collaborates and assist Physics III in administrative aspects related to management of the physics section, ensuring that the staff and infrastructure of the physics section supports the clinical needs of the departments.

Responsibilities:

  • Regulatory and Accreditation Requirements:
    • As a member of the Imaging Physics team, Diagnostic Medical Physicist II is expected to maintain expertise in regulatory and accreditation requirements (e.g. state, federal, TJC, ACR) that pertain to Diagnostic Imaging.
  • Physics Equipment Testing:
    • The physics department is responsible for ensuring all physics testing in Radiography, Mammography, Fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, and Nuclear Medicine are completed and meet all State, Federal, and accreditation requirements.
    • There will be opportunity for a Physicist to specialize within a particular advanced modality (CT, MRI, FGI, Nuclear Medicine), however, each physicist will be expected to maintain competency in multiple imagining modalities.
    • Diagnostic Medical Physicist II will also be expected to mentor and trained level 1 physicist in advanced modality surveys.
  • Optimization of Techniques/Clinical Applications:
    • The Physicist will assure equipment is used optimally and will work with technologists and radiologists to develop clinical and research protocols. Physicists will provide in-service technologist training as needed.
  • Will be expected to assist in the following duties:
    • Site planning in the form of shielding design and shielding integrity verification.
    • Patient dose estimates (fetal, skin, effective dose)
    • Imaging physics education for residents, clinical staff, and students in the NM Academy Schools.
    • Involvement in the hospital Radiation Safety Committee
    • Involvement in hospital committees that pertain to the management and use of medical imaging
    • Mentorship and training of level I physicists (un-boarded physicists directly out of residency)
  • Working Conditions:
    • The Imaging Physics group is responsible for overseeing the completion of physics services for the Northwestern Medicine network. This involves traveling to NM imaging centers and hospitals in the north and west suburbs. Physicists have a primary reporting location of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, but physicists will also be expected to travel to off-sites to support physics services. Mileage expenses is reimbursed.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of a Master of Science degree in Medical Physics or related field
  • Board Certified by American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Diagnostic Medical Physics or in previous medical physics certification categories
  • Registered OR eligible for registration as a Diagnostic Imaging Specialist with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA).
    • Must obtain DIS designation through IEMA within 3 months of hire.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Physicist

Preferred:

  • 3+ years of experience as an Imaging/Diagnostic Medial Physicist
  • MQSA qualified
  • Experience and proven ability in imaging protocol optimization in CT and/or MRI
