We are looking for the right individual to design, implement, and support Arapahoe County's LAN, WAN, VoIP, and related network systems. The focus of this position centers around producing timely, high-quality results in a fast-paced, Cisco Meraki centric environment. Our desired candidate will have an analytical, inquiring and critical mind, creativity, strong problem-solving skills, a strong technical orientation, and must be a team player.

The Senior Network Engineer performs advanced administration, design, and support of the Arapahoe County data and voice network infrastructure utilizing a wide range of highly technical duties in the configuration, implementation, and operation of the network core, distribution, access, WAN and edge layer routers and switches, virtual private and public cloud networks, next generation firewalls, wireless networks, security controls, network service providers, and related services.

***The anticipated hiring range for the Senior Network Engineer position is $3,577 to $4,538 bi-weekly depending on education and experience.

Duties

  • Performs a variety of advanced technical duties and functions to plan, design, configure, implement, maintain, and support the County's data and voice network infrastructure and associated network services.
  • Configures and installs various network devices and services (e.g. routers, switches, wireless devices, VPN, firewalls, QoS, SNMP, VoIP phones, routing and switching protocols) that support and provide County services to internal and external customers.
  • Performs architectural design and technical road mapping for the data and voice network infrastructure and associated services.
  • Performs Tier 1 through Tier 3 technical support and troubleshooting of the data and voice network infrastructure to identify and resolve the root cause of failure or fault.
  • Travels to various County facilities or locations to work on, support, install, or replace data and voice network equipment.
  • Performs network systems maintenance and upgrades including operating system upgrades, patches, hot fixes and security configurations to minimize security vulnerabilities and reliability issues resulting from defective or outdated code.
  • Uses, configures, and maintains network management tools to monitor, track, and manage data and voice network infrastructure equipment.
  • Exhibits technical leadership and serves as a network subject matter expert resource on multi-functional IT project teams.
  • Applies and enforces County security policies, standards, and controls to secure network infrastructure from unauthorized access or usage.
  • Monitors and tracks network performance, utilization, usage trending and capacity to ensure network availability and reliability.
  • Works within established configuration and change management policy to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructure.
  • Identifies opportunities for improving and/or increasing operational efficiency of the network infrastructure by working with vendors, researching, testing, evaluating, and recommending solutions.
  • Creates and maintains procedural, process, administrative, and technical documentation.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of emerging tools and network technologies.
  • Effectively collaborates and communicates with team mates, vendors, County staff, peer jurisdictions, and professional organizations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Technical Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

  • First-hand experience with Cisco Meraki network equipment configuring, installing, troubleshooting, and supporting switches, MX appliances, routers, and wireless network hardware.
  • Experience administrating and using enterprise class firewall appliances such as Check Point or equivalent.
  • Experience in public cloud network connectivity and security design architectures, SDWAN, and related services.
  • Designing, implementing, and managing ACLs, VLANs, and routing on Cisco and Meraki equipment.
  • Knowledge of high-level utilities used to install, maintain, manage, and troubleshoot the network environment e.g., Wireshark, Packet Captures, and scripting languages such as Python.
  • SolarWinds/Orion expertise highly desired (Specifically NPM, NTA, NCM, and IPAM modules)
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art data and network technologies and the ability to incorporate new concepts into the planning and implementation processes for the data and voice environment.
  • Experience using and performing Moves, Adds, and Changes with Cisco Call Manager, Unity, Cisco Contact Center Express.
  • Experience with structured cable management, knowledge of Layer 1 concepts, technologies, media types and interfaces, and ability to use cable and wireless network testing tools.

  • Ability to continue personal development and education to remain informed of current industry development technologies. Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies.

Specific Requirements

  • Requires advanced technical knowledge of Layer 3 network switching and routing concepts and devices, next generation firewalls, IP addressing and subnetting, TCP/IP, DNS, VoIP, and use of diagnostic tools such as Wireshark.
  • Requires advanced working knowledge of:
    1. TCP/IP, QoS, IPSec, SSL, SNMP, multicast, Netflow/NBAR, OSPF, BGP routing protocols
    2. VLANs, VLAN Trunking Protocol, Spanning Tree Protocol, Network Access Control Lists, and link aggregation and segmentation concepts and technologies.
  • Ability to plan, design, manage, and support a large, multi-site network topography utilizing a variety of service provider connection types.
  • Skilled at understanding and applying network security best practices, cyber security frameworks, common security controls and risk mitigation processes.
  • Ability to create network diagrams, understand architectural drawings, develop project plans, and lead network installations or upgrade projects.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Written skills include the ability to write technical documentation for fellow team members. Oral network skills include ability to effectively communicate network concepts to a variety of audiences.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer Networking or related field.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience
  • Any equivalent combination of education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job may be considered.
Supplemental Information

Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:

  • Pre-employment testing includes an acceptable current motor vehicle check and background check.
  • Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment.

Post-Employment Requirements:

  • Will also require post-hire fingerprinting, a CBI background check and successfully completing bi-annual Colorado Justice Information System training.
  • Position is deemed essential and incumbents must be available for winter storm emergencies.
  • Must be available to work on an on-call on a rotational basis requiring evenings, holidays and weekends.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends as business needs dictate.
  • Work locations and facilities are subject to change based on business need.
