Primary Purpose:
Apprentice Signal Trainees will be trained to perform the duties of Signal Workers. Signal Workers are an important link between ensuring compliance to FRA regulations and customer satisfaction while achieving the safest most efficient railroad operations.
Principal Duties:
Apprentice Signal Trainee Training Program
Week 1-3: Signal Training-1 (McDonough, GA)
Week 4-16: OJT Signal Construction Gang
Week 11-9: Signal Training-2 (McDonough, GA)
Weeks 20-40: OJT Signal Maintenance Training
Week 41-43: Signal Training-3 (McDonough, GA)
Weeks 44-52: Additional OJT training
Eastern Region Seniority Districts: Buffalo NY, Binghamton NY, Albany NY, Hartford CT, Allentown PA, Reading PA, Harrisburg PA, Pittsburgh, PA
N&W Region Seniority Districts: Erie PA, Cleveland OH, Akron OH, Columbus OH, Fort Wayne IN, A
Southern Lines East Seniority Districts: Raleigh NC, Ashville NC, Charlotte NC, Columbia SC, Greenville SC, Gainesville GA, Knoxville TN, Memphis TN, Huntsville AL, Jackson MS

Rate of Pay
The rate of pay for Signal Trainees during the first three (3) weeks of Signal Training 1 (ST1) at the Norfolk Southern Training Center, will be $350 per week. Trainees will also be afforded $20 per day for meal expenses while attending classes at the training center. Upon completion of the third week of ST1, Signal Trainees shall be paid at the first step rateof the Assistant's classification, which is $29.40 per hour. After 130 days of apprentice training, Signal Trainees will advance to the second step rateof the Assistant's classification, which is $29.71 per hour. Upon completion of 275 days of training, Signal Trainees will be increased to the full rate of an Assistant Signalman/Assistant Maintainer. The current Assistant Signalmen/Signal Maintainers rate is $30.31 per hour.
