The Department of Literacy, Early, Bilingual, Special Education (LEBSE) at CSU Fresno seeks applicants for two tenure-track positions as Assistant Professor in early childhood education (ECE). Preference will be given to candidates with experience in early childhood contexts (birth to age eight). The successful candidate will teach post-baccalaureate teacher candidates and graduate students, serve on thesis/project committees, conduct scholarly research, and engage in service activities.
Primary teaching responsibilities include foundational courses for early childhood education and developmental theory. The typical course load in Kremen School of Education is 4/4 (3-unit courses), with possible course releases for coordinating programs and conducting research. Newly hired tenure-track faculty also receive a one-course release per semester for the first two years. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.
Job Responsibilities:
- Teach Courses in the Early Childhood Education Graduate Program and Credential Programs, including PK-3 Credential Program
- Maintain an active research agenda in early education settings focusing on children, birth to age eight
- Take action on diversity, equity, and inclusion with local early childhood stakeholders
- Provide support for existing and new partnerships and teacher residencies
- Advise and mentor students' fieldwork experiences, projects, and theses.
- Contribute to national and state accreditation through conducting data collection and analysis.
- Serve as Early Childhood Education graduate program coordinator or PK-3 credential coordinator as needed.

Qualifications:
Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):
- Doctorate in Early Childhood Education; Child Development; Bilingual Education; Psychology, such as in the areas of Developmental, Child, Applied, Community, or Educational; Curriculum Studies; Multicultural Education; or closely related fields.
- Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For employment the doctorate must be completed by 8/1/2023.
Required Experience:
- Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds;
- Experience working with infants and toddlers, but also knowledge of children (birth to age eight) in multiple contexts such as
- family child care,
- in home or center-based child care,
- Early Head Start/Head Start, and/or
- public school early childhood settings (e.g., Transitional Kindergarten-Grade 3)
- Evidence of engaging in and disseminating research related to early childhood education.
Preferred Experience:
- Three years of successful teaching experience at the Birth-Grade 3 level.
- Evidence of commitment to social justice/culturally sustaining pedagogy.
- Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate early childhood education courses in teacher education programs
- Experience supervising students in clinical/fieldwork early childhood education settings such as coaching practices and common early childhood assessments
- Knowledge of and experience implementing the principles in National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) code of Ethical Conduct and NAEYC's Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators.
- Knowledge of and experience with applying for grants related to early learning and care
- Experience with or interest in forming partnerships with local early childhood community stakeholders
- Experience with early childhood education advocacy for children and families and at the policy level
- Experience applying best literacy practices in early childhood settings (0-8).

About the College and Department:
The Kremen School of Education and Human Development's (KSOEHD) mission is recruitment and development of ethically informed leaders for classroom teaching, education administration, counseling, and higher education. Our programs are accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). Together, the programs aim to foster candidate dispositions of collaboration, valuing diversity, critical thinking, ethical judgments, reflection, and lifelong learning. Our mission is realized through a framework of teaching, scholarship, and services that prepare highly competent educators and human development specialists, while providing professional support and leadership to the community, promoting applied research, and providing experiences and opportunities that will enable employed professionals to remain current in their fields. The Literacy, Early, Bilingual and Special Education department includes a dynamic group of faculty within a variety of programs in education. The department focuses on post-baccalaureate courses including teacher credential, certification, and graduate courses. Department faculty across literacy, early childhood, special education and multilingual programs have collaborated to create unique teacher residency models with urban and rural district partners across the Central Valley region.
The mission of the Early Childhood Education Program is to empower early childhood teachers and program leaders to positively affect children's and families' lives and learning in a culturally and linguistically diverse society. The Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education program is the ONLY nationally accredited Early Childhood Education master's program in the state of California recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). In line with California's expansion to offer universal preschool and transitional kindergarten, the Early Childhood Education Program meets the region's needs in multiple ways: (1) a Certificate program for elementary teachers interested in teaching Transitional Kindergarten; (2) beginning in Fall 2023, a PK-3 credential program; and (3) a Teacher Residency Program focused on preparing teachers for transitional kindergarten.
Fresno State is also home to three child development centers within its Programs for Children (PFC): The Joyce M. Huggins Early Education Center (Huggins Center, a Reggio inspired center), housed in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development; the Campus Children's Infant/Toddler Center; and the Campus Children's Preschool Center, all of which provide services for children between the ages of 3 months and 12 years and learning spaces for our program's students. Annually, PFC serves approximately 200 racially and economically mixed children (46% Hispanic, 24% White, 4% Black/African American, 11% Asian, and 15% multi-racial) of Fresno State students, faculty, staff, and local community residents. PFC was accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in 2019 and has earned Fresno County Early Stars's highest 5-star rating. Faculty within the ECE program have many opportunities to be involved in grant-funded innovative programming, including Spanish Dual Language Immersion Programing and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) Preschool Programs.
