The position opening for a Mechanical Designer offers exciting opportunities in a variety of cross sector fields in Industrial, Power Generation and Renewables.

HDR is seeking a Mechanical BIM Designer 3 to join our Michigan-based Power Generation team. As a Mechanical BIM Designer 3 you will utilize Computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) for preparing mechanical drawings and performing mechanical design of piping systems for utility, industrial, and institutional power & energy facilities. Candidate will prepare site layout drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment arrangements, piping isometrics and orthographic drawings, composite arrangement drawings, bills-of-material, lists, sketches, section views, and other detailed drawings required for construction under limited guidance of a senior mechanical designer or engineer. Piping will be routed in 2D or 3D model space using AutoCAD or Plant 3D. Candidate shall demonstrate knowledge of procedures for production of design developments and construction documents, and a thorough knowledge of engineering planning, drafting, and detailing. Responsibilities may also include performing surveys using Lidar technology and processing point cloud data to develop models of existing facilities. Candidate may be assigned to short term field assignments at client's facilities to support project work. Candidate must possess a high pride of ownership in the detail and quality of the documents that they prepare. Candidate must have a willingness to mentor junior staff and collaborate daily with other members of the design team including engineers, designers, and project managers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) or similar degree and relevant experience is required
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in electric power generation industry, industrial energy plant design, or another relevant field with regards to piping, mechanical equipment, and cross-discipline coordination.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD P&ID, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Revit and Navisworks is preferred. Knowledge of Microstation is a plus.
  • Computer skills using Microsoft Office
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills, be organized, quality conscious, and attentive to meeting project schedules and budgets.
  • Must be able to work well with technicians, engineers, and support staff from within the discipline.
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm desirable.
  • The position will require minimal travel to attend meetings with clients and to walk-down project sites. Travel is typically less than 5%.
  • Ability to work overtime for short periods when needed to meet project schedules or short term field assignments is required.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm desirable.
