Job Description


SMSI is looking for a Nuclear Facilities Operations Engineer for work at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in Los Alamos, New Mexico. This is a full-time position and can be a flex work schedule.

Job Description

The Nuclear Facility Operations Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the technical aspects of construction, maintenance, and operations projects are executed in full conformance with the Approved Project Documents by monitoring facility maintenance and construction activities. This is accomplished by providing input during scoping, design, execution, and project closeout to ensure baseline documents are accurate, design documents are adhered to, and as-built configurations are verified. Operations Engineers expedite project execution by identifying issues, coordinating technical solutions, and providing timely guidance to the constructor through approved procedures. The Operations Engineer will require an understanding of field engineering principles and have an aptitude to apply these principles in the execution of the job.

Responsibilities:

The Nuclear Facilities Operations Engineer is principally responsible for:

  • Knowledge of nuclear facility engineering in one or more of the following areas:
    • nuclear criticality safety analysis
    • safety basis
    • system engineer
    • project engineer
    • design engineer
  • Knowledge of nuclear facility engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Knowledge of project and process nuclear facility engineering and operational practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic construction engineering principles.
  • Aptitude in reading and understanding engineering design documents, drawings, and specifications to ensure their completeness, constructability, and operability.
  • Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.
  • Aptitude for conducting field verifications of construction work to oversee, facilitate, and enforce compliance with drawings, specifications, national codes and standards.
  • Aptitude in collaborative problem solving to resolve nuclear facility and infrastructure engineering issues in the field as the liaison between design engineers and the constructor.
  • Knowledge of interface relationships with functional groups such as Engineering, Construction, Project Management and Operations.

  • Demonstrated expertise in reading and understanding engineering design documents, drawings, and specifications to ensure their completeness and constructability.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting construction industry specifications, construction means and methods, and national construction codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.
  • proficiency in conducting field verifications of construction work to oversee, facilitate, and enforce compliance with drawings, specifications, national codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in collaborative problem solving to resolve nuclear facility engineering issues in the field as the liaison between design engineers , the constructor and operations personnel.
  • Maintains direct working relationships with Project Management, Project and Field Engineering, Construction, Project Controls, Procurement personnel to ensure mutual understanding, development, and attainment of objectives.
  • Reviews any schedule revisions for impacts and participates in the development of contingency planning.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction and operations engineering principles
  • Demonstrated expertise in reading and understanding engineering design documents, drawings, and specifications to ensure their completeness and constructability.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • 2 years minimum of relevant experience.
  • Current registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
  • Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired or operational experience in nuclear environment.

This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. DOE 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years job related experience and 1 year non-reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel who perform work independently at nuclear facilities. The Nuclear Facility Engineer 2 position would be expected to be able to obtain the nuclear experience on the job if they do not have it upon hire before becoming fully qualified.
