Job Details:

Purpose

Manage the reactor operations team and supervise the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Licensed UT-Austin TRIGA research reactor in compliance with applicable federal regulations and in support of its use as a significant research and educational tool to further the University's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering Support and Training - Reactor scheduling, S-badge training, Course support. Ensure all activities are conducted safely and within applicable program, license, and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements. Direction of Reactor Operators including scheduling work, giving working direction and managing workflow. Management of training programs to educate new Reactor Operators.
  • Maintain documents and procedures - Manage facility administrative programs (emergency plan, security plan, and operator requalification program). Maintain operational records, operational procedures, maintenance procedures, maintenance of electronic files, posted document maintenance, annual inventory updates.
  • Maintenance and surveillance - Oversee facility safety and security. Perform and/or supervise required routine preventive and corrective maintenance on digital and analog reactor control and instrumentation system, address unanticipated failures, manage system upgrades and development.
  • Operational Support - Perform mission critical activities (reactor operations, maintenance, operator training, research, education and outreach). Communication and collaboration with faculty and research staff to facilitate research experiments.
  • Reactor License and Interaction with NRC - Emergency planning and drills, NRC inspections, Reactor Oversight Committee support, operator licensing and requalification exams, site security. Maintenance of regulatory requirements for the NRC including records of plant operations. Participation in NRC inspections and internal audits.
  • Security - Manage access authorization, manage security enhancements.
  • Other related functions as assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science field; OR technological school certificate or military training in associated or related field AND seven years of experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills at supervisor level, or above.
  • Minimum two years of nuclear reactor operation and maintenance experience.
  • Must obtain a Senior Reactor Operator license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for assigned facility within six months from date of employment.
  • Proficiency with customer service.
  • Applicants must submit to a fingerprint-based criminal history check, a background investigation, and be evaluated as trustworthy and reliable by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Applicant must be able to obtain access to export controlled software and be able to work with experiments that have export control requirements.
  • Applicant must meet medical requirements for a nuclear reactor operator license.
  • Demonstrated excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize own work and team's work under dynamic circumstances.
  • Be able to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. in a science or engineering discipline.
  • 3 or more years of experience as an active reactor operator at a university reactor, as BWR / PWR facility employee, or in a military equivalent position such as Nuclear Navy plant operations or Engineering Officers of the Watch.
  • Experience in repair and maintenance of analog and digital electronic controllers and systems.
  • Experience in handling radioactive and hazardous materials.
  • Previous training or education in the fundamentals of nuclear reactor theory and operations
  • Previous qualification as Senior Reactor Operator.

Salary Range

$95,000+ depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Work with energized electrical circuits, high and low voltage.
  • Occasional work with hazardous materials (chemical, cryogenics, compressed gas, and radioactive materials)
  • Work in a laboratory environment.
  • May be required on occasions to work evenings and weekends.
