Job Description

Company Background: RedCastle Resources is a progressive, employee-friendly company providing geospatial and information technology support to natural resource management agencies throughout the country and around the world. We specialize in the analysis of remote sensing, ecological, and other geospatial data, focusing on technical expertise and communicating with natural resource managers and other subject matter experts. The majority of our staff provide support through contracts with the USDA Forest Service, assisting National Forests, Regional and Washington Offices, USFS Research, International Programs, and partner federal agencies to use advanced geospatial data and technology for improved mapping, inventorying, and monitoring of natural resources.

Position Description: The Quantitative Ecologist will work as part of the RedCastle Resources team to lead and conduct scientific assessments, from problem conceptualization to methods development/deployment to results generation and interpretation to finally communicating results and findings. Strong scientific problem-solving skills, as demonstrated by the ability to tackle novel problems through investigative and iterative means. Specifically the successful candidate will be responsible for producing statistical analyses and models for a number of major programs under Forest Health Protection (FHP), including: the National Insect and Disease Risk Map (NIDRM), Insect and Disease Survey (IDS), the Pest Event Reporter (PER), and invasive species. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for performing integrative statistical analysis and modeling of FHP data with Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA).

Although the position is not a GIS or remote sensing position, strong working familiarity with standard GIS software, such as ArcGIS Pro and/or Desktop, as well as disparate GIS and remotely sensed data, are important. Candidate will be expected to provide assistance to others on GIS, remote sensing, and statistical task-oriented problems with only a general description of the desired end products. Will conduct technical reviews of other GIS and remote sensing analyst work when necessary to solve problems or ensure scientific standards are met. Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and/or Desktop, Google Earth Engine (GEE) JavaScript and/or Python APIs, R, and Python highly desirable.

Successful candidates should be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, be able to work independently, be able to collaborate with resource specialists, and be adaptable to changing client priorities.

Education and Experience:
The successful candidate will have an MS or PhD degree in ecology, biology, forestry, or similar relevant field, AND at least five (5) years of specialized professional work experience in addressing applied natural resource problems and questions. Use of computer software to conduct quantitative analyses, statistical analyses, geospatial data analyses, and simulations. Demonstrated experience developing spatial models or analyses of biological/ecological systems. Demonstrated ability to work independently and be innovative.
