Your Opportunity

The HR & Safety Coordinator assists in the administration of various HR and Safety functions by applying general knowledge of HR and Safety system processes and procedures. This position will assist in accident reduction programs, assisting in technical expertise to the plant safety and health teams, regulatory compliance, employee wellness programs, supporting safety training on safety and health topics and encouraging active employee involvement in the safety process. Also responsible for providing and preparing for emergency medical care.

Core Responsibilities

Coordination of HR & Safety Programs

    Obtains overall knowledge, management and implementation of internal safety programs and regulatory compliance including: Smithfield Injury Prevention System (SIPS), Workers Compensation, (PSM) Process Safety Management, Ergonomics, Auditing, Incident Investigation, Team and Committees, Budgets, Behavioral Based Safety and 1910 CFR Regulatory Compliance.
  • Processes human resource documentation for new hires, including I-9 compliance.
  • Enters employee data into HRIS, including on-boarding information, disciplinary action notes, address changes, telephone number changes, etc.
  • Assists in the coordination of the plant employee benefit program.
  • Assists in pre-employment screening, applicant assessments and employment verifications.
  • May review employment applications/resumes and interview applicants
  • Assists in sick leave and leave of absence program, family and medical leave administration, benefit continuation and premium payment tracking.
  • Enters daily attendance information.

Administrative Documentation and Organization

  • Ensures training and documentation is maintained in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Informs supervisory personnel of employee restrictions due to work-related injury or illness and ensures employees are working within those restrictions.
  • Participates in the accident investigation process.
  • Answers routine questions and inquires that require knowledge of established departmental procedures and familiarity with operations and programs within human resources.
  • Provides customer service and problem solving for employees by assisting in resolution of questions or complaints.
  • Assists in preparation of orientation and/or training documentation.
  • Conducts follow up exit interviews.

Special Projects

  • May participate in special projects and initiatives, presenting findings to the plant management and/or corporate management as needed.
  • Completes special assignments and projects as required. May research files for difficult-to-find data.
  • Perform tasks and other administrative projects as assigned.

Absence

  • In the absence of key personnel, the employee's supervisor or qualified designee (one that has been trained in the key employee's duties) is responsible to complete or delegate the completion of all required tasks and responsibilities.

Training

  • Acts as a lead by training, mentoring, and providing guidance to less experienced employees in the plant.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree from a regionally accredited college or university and 2 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience, required.
  • Must be able to work with all levels of an organization and manage up effectively.
  • Solid understanding of Human Resources functions and requirements.
  • Ability to deal with and handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and tact.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Outstanding motivation skills and positive attitude required.
  • Previous SAP/HCM system experience a preferred.
  • Previous Applicant Tracking System, (iCIMS) experience preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to build relationships both within and outside the organization.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word) and analysis capability.
  • Good decision-making skills and ability to perform in stressful situations.
  • Must be able to travel on an occasional basis.
  • Preferably bi-lingual in Spanish language.
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

  • The majority of the time is spent in an office setting outside of the production plant. The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.
  • Frequently required to sit; use hands to handle or feel and talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
