Job Description
Job Title: Maintenance Technician/General Maintenance/Electrical Repair/Electrical Installations
Shift timings: Standard shift Monday to Friday
Job Description:
  • Performs specialized maintenance work within an assigned County division, which may involve water utilities maintenance, plumbing maintenance, aquatic control, lake/beach maintenance, grounds maintenance, parks/recreational facility maintenance, aquatic facility maintenance, road/bridge maintenance, roadside maintenance, traffic operations, road sign installation, building maintenance, custodial maintenance, or other projects within the assigned division; assists skilled-trade employees or other workers as needed.
  • Performs various tasks involving water utilities maintenance projects; locates and marks underground utility lines; locates existing utilities from blueprints; operates camera and vactor truck to view/clean sewer pipes, gravity systems, and service connections; cleans and views lift stations, sanitary gravity lines, force mains, and service lines; views tapes of sewer system for acceptance; operates camera to locate service connections, breaks, and bores in sewer pipes; vacuums debris from manholes and stations; monitors and pumps down high-level stations; cuts sewer lines using chop saw; repairs sewer lines; repairs and installs gravity lines; performs grouting of service/gravity lines; cleans blockages, lateral lines, and excavation areas; cleans storm drains; inspects manholes and lift stations after relining; fills water reservoir from fire hydrants; rebuilds pumps; installs, repairs, or replaces valves; disassembles, cleans, inspects, and maintains camera; replaces light bulbs; cleans/maintains trucks and drains debris tanks on trucks; develops and maintains County odor control program to neutralize offensive/noxious gases generating from sewage collection system; reviews design data and specifications of existing and proposed odor control units; conducts field studies to identify areas in need of odor control units or replacement/rehabilitation of existing units; monitors and records test unit data; maintains and paints pumps, motors, pipes, and hydrants; assists with cleaning of degasifiers/reactors and sludge systems; performs preventive maintenance on equipment; assembles and repairs backflow devices; assembles bacteriological sample stations; conducts cross-connection control inspections of customers; repairs or replaces sustaining, regulation, and pressure reducing valves.
  • Performs various tasks involving plumbing maintenance/repair projects; designs irrigation systems and prepares diagrams of field irrigation; installs irrigation systems, irrigation controllers, pumps, valves, small turf rotors, golf rotors, switches, and related components; troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems and minor plumbing problems; troubleshoots irrigation controller, pumps, and valves; traces valve wires and repairs wire problems; rewires controllers and valves; traces and repairs problems involving hydraulics, golf rotors, and pressure; tests rotors for proper nozzle size; installs gate and ball valves as needed; repairs broken pipes; replaces diaphragms, solenoids on valves, and other components; repairs pressure tanks; sets tank pressure and pressure readings; upgrades and renovates systems; obtains price quotes for new installations; installs fertigation systems; schedules fertigation system fills; tests electrical components of systems.
  • Performs various tasks involving aquatic control and maintenance of lakes, beaches, canals, or ditches; trims palm trees; maintains and repairs community street lights, entrance feature lighting, and signage; replaces light bulbs and ballasts; assists with bay monitoring activities; rakes beach sand; cleans lakes and canals; mixes chemicals for application of aquatic herbicides and pesticides; loads chemicals; calibrates and maintains spray pumps; cuts/removes weeds, grass, cattails, or other vegetation around lake; controls vegetation in drainage system for maximum drainage; picks up and removes dead fish and animals.
  • Performs various tasks involving grounds maintenance or landscaping projects; mows grass; edges landscaped areas, public areas, parking lots, sidewalks, and fence lines; plants and maintains trees, shrubs, and flowers; waters flowers, grass, and landscaped areas; weeds flower beds; trims trees, hedges, and shrubs; cuts down trees and tree limbs; grinds stumps; installs/lays sod; aerates, seeds, fertilizes, and waters grounds; applies herbicides and pesticides; spreads pine straw, mulch, and other grounds materials; rakes and disposes of grass clippings, brush, and other materials; blows leaves/debris from walkways; picks up and disposes of debris/litter from grounds and parking lots; empties trash containers; removes dead animals from grounds or roadways; hauls garbage, tree limbs, and vegetation to landfill or other designated location; digs holes/trenches and shovels materials.
  • Performs various tasks involving maintenance of parks, athletic fields, and recreational facilities; drags, grooms, and top dresses ball fields; spreads clay in ball fields; measures, marks, lays out, and paints playing fields and lines according to specifications; installs, repairs, or adjusts pitching rubbers, home plates, and bases; maintains tennis, basketball, and bocci courts; replaces and repairs tennis nets and volleyball nets; installs and repairs tennis wind screens; repairs playground equipment; maintains boat launching ramps and boat docks; maintains playground and recreational equipment; repairs gates and fences; assembles and repairs bleachers, benches, and picnic tables; sets timers for lights and irrigation systems; sweeps and blows out dugouts; removes debris from fields, grounds, and lake.
  • Performs various tasks involving maintenance of aquatic facilities; locks/unlocks facilities and checks for unsafe conditions or faulty equipment; removes pool covers; checks pool chemical levels and adds/removes chemicals as needed; conducts super-chlorination of pool water; cleans/vacuums pool; cleans/backwashes pool filters; cleans pump house and pump basket; replaces chemical hoses and rebuilds chemical pumps; cleans probes and injectors; repairs and maintains lockers; maintains and repairs exterior lighting; blows debris from pool deck and sidewalks.
  • Performs various tasks involving road/bridge maintenance or roadside maintenance projects; patches potholes in road surfaces; repairs roads, bridges, and rights-of-way with asphalt and lime rock; installs, repairs, replaces, and cleans out drainage pipes; creates and maintains roadside ditches/swales; builds, installs, and repairs catch basins, curbs, sidewalks, and bike paths; cuts driveways; repairs and maintains guardrails; paints guardrails, bridges, barricades, and road striping; repairs high-pressure hoses; clears/mows right-of-way, roadside ditches, shoulders, and medians; performs vegetation control tasks; cleans/sweeps intersections, roadways, sidewalks, bike paths, and other areas; picks up and disposes of accident debris, dead animals, litter, and other debris; reports hazardous roadway conditions.
  • Performs various tasks involving traffic operations and road sign installation projects, including using computerized traffic sign design/manufacturing program; programs traffic data recorders; sets up sensors/counters and road tubes, and secures in roadway; removes and picks up sensors/counters and road tubes; collects data from traffic data recorders and downloads into computer; conducts manual counts as needed; prints traffic count data and reviews for errors; repairs counters and road tubes; installs, maintains, and repairs roadway signs, barricades, and roadway markings; reports traffic signal problems; assists in constructing signs; maintains current inventory of existing signs, materials, tools, and supplies; trims brush from road signs or work areas; reports and/or removes roadway hazards.
  • Maintains buildings, machinery, and pipes at water plants and outlying stations troubleshoots routine electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and other plant problems; performs pigging/swabbing at wellfields and flushes the system; repairs, maintains, calibrates, and tests equipment; performs wellfield drawdowns; resets telemetry systems; removes and replaces high service and chemical pumps; operates belt presses and flushes sludge lines.
  • Coordinates valve maintenance activities operates vactor truck mechanisms to clean valves; maintains and catalogs blueprints; responds to main breaks to develop and initiate isolation plans; raises/lowers valve boxes; and replaces damaged, defective, or outdated valves. Coordinates the mapping of water valves within the system utilizes global positioning system to collect and maintain data; locates, identifies, and documents placement of valves in the system; and coordinates tagging of valves on roadways.
  • Performs various tasks involving building maintenance projects; performs light construction projects; pressure-washes exterior walls and other areas; paints interior/exterior surfaces and equipment; performs masonry work; welds/mends broken or worn parts; replaces batteries, light bulbs, and ballasts; maintains heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems; troubleshoots HVAC leaks or other problems; cleans condenser coils and replaces filters/belts.
  • Performs various tasks involving custodial maintenance projects; sweeps, vacuums, mops, strips, and/or waxes floor surfaces; cleans, deodorizes, and disinfects bathrooms and locker rooms; replenishes soap and paper products; empties trash cans, recycling containers, and ash urns; carries/transports trash to dumpster or other designated trash receptacle; cleans light fixtures; removes graffiti from walls, walkways, or other surfaces.
  • Performs general/manual tasks associated with division projects; sets up safe work zones at work sites, places traffic cones/signs, and conducts traffic control as needed; sharpens blades and replaces parts; climbs ladders; sets up or arranges equipment for special events/activities; lifts/moves furniture, equipment, and heavy materials; assists with cleanup following hurricanes, storms, or emergency situations.
  • Responds to after-hours emergency calls when scheduled for on-call duty; repairs main/service breaks; evaluates service calls, determines amount of water loss, and determines needed Client, equipment, parts, and materials; determines need to request location of utility services; flushes systems after repairs; requests bacteria samples from laboratory.

  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning project work areas, or cleaning shop; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. Transports, loads, and unloads equipment and materials used in projects; transports crew workers to/from work sites.
  • Monitors inventory levels of supplies and materials; ensures availability of adequate supplies, tools, and materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, daily activity logs, inspection forms, purchase requisitions, work orders, maintenance records, charts, pool chemical readings, chemical logs, ground storage tank reports, confined space reports, traffic count data, traffic study reports, fuel quality records, diagrams, graphs, timecards, leave requests, or other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, lists, schedules, work orders, delivery receipts, invoices, laboratory reports, technical studies, service/maintenance schedules, maintenance records, traffic count data, traffic studies, reclaim water contracts, chemical charts, chemical labels, insecticide charts, operational manuals, material safety data sheets, diagrams, blueprints, construction drawings, building permits, maps, laws, policies, procedures, regulations, standards, directories, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Operates a personal computer as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, desktop publishing, utility location system, sewer viewing system, traffic count system, collection of sign attributes and location data, e mail, or other computer programs.
  • Communicates with supervisor, other divisions, employees, contractors, developers, engineers, utility companies, vendors/suppliers, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, methods, and procedures; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

Qualification:
  • High school diploma or GED*; supplemented by vocational/technical training in general maintenance, mechanics, electrical maintenance, plumbing, water utility operations, or specialized work in area of assignment; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving grounds maintenance, road maintenance, water utilities maintenance, general building maintenance, equipment operation, and/or specialized work in area of assignment, such as electrical maintenance, irrigation system maintenance, underground utility location, sewer cleaning camera/truck operation, or wastewater collections; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • May require other certifications as related to position or for specialized areas of assignment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License with any applicable endorsements and maintain eligibility requirements and endorsement(s) to drive a county vehicle as provided in CMA 5805.
  • Fingerprinting required. *General Educational Development (GEDs) must be issued by the American Council on Education through an approved GED Administrator.
  • For Florida the approved GED Administrator would be the Florida Department of Education (public schools or adult education centers).
  • If assigned to Road & Bridge business unit, High school diploma or GED is not required.
  • If assigned to Parks & Recreation: Tasks involving maintenance of aquatic center facilities may require possession and maintenance of valid Certified Pool Operator certification. Tasks involving the transportation of heavy equipment for maintenance projects may require possession of a Commercial Driver's License.
  • If assigned to Public Utilities: Tasks involving water utility operations/maintenance may require possession and maintenance of valid Class 3 Water Distribution Technician certification or Class C Wastewater Collection Technician certification. Tasks involving Wastewater Collections may require possession of a Class B Commercial Driver's license with tanker and hazardous materials endorsements or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • If assigned to Traffic Operations: May require possession and maintenance of valid IMSA Signs & Markings certification, IMSA Work Zone Safety certification, and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Traffic Safety in the Work Area certification.
