What to Expect
Disclaimer: This position is expected to start around January 2023 and continue through the entire Winter/Spring term (i.e., through April/May) or into early Summer 2023 if available. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time, for most internships. Please consider before applying. International students: if your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. Again, please do not apply until you know you can work 40 hours per week. This is required for external applicants. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

What You'll Do

About the Team

Tesla's Mobile Robotics team designs and builds humanoid bi-pedal robots (Tesla Bot) to automate repetitive tasks and wheeled robots for manufacturing and autonomous logistics. The team joins mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and manufacturing engineering disciplines in a highly collaborative team.

The Mobile Robotics team is seeking a highly motivated electrical engineering intern who thrives in a fast-paced environment and wants to work on cutting-edge electronic systems for our robots. Within the Mobile Robotics group, you'll have the opportunity to work with incredibly talented engineers who are responsible for many of Tesla's innovations. We love when candidates show real-world projects with electronics they've designed.

  • Develop electrical cabinets for use with industrial robotics, including custom PCB layout, harness layout, and off-the-shelf part selection
  • Start to finish ownership of projects: specification, architecture, circuit design, simulation, schematic, layout supervision, prototype, validation, and manufacturing support
  • Rapidly iterate as architecture evolves
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers
  • Thoroughly document design requirements, calculations, power budgets, validation results
What You'll Bring
  • Working toward BS or higher degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering (MSEE preferred)
  • Experience developing electronic systems for robots
  • Programming ability (Python, embedded C/C++)
  • Experience with circuit board and/or industrial cabinet design
  • Competent in PCB CAD software (Altium preferred)
  • Understanding of analog & digital circuits (motor control, MOSFETs, op-amps, switching regulators, gate drivers, microcontrollers, SPI, I2C, etc.)
  • Proficiency with lab equipment and troubleshooting
  • Communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, EtherCAT)
  • Examples of end-to-end ownership of electronics design projects
