Job Description

The Editorial Specialist manages all aspects related to production of The Hematologist podcast and other special podcast series, as well as several of the Society's e-newsletters (The Hematologist, ASH News Daily, ASH NewsLink, and Hematopoiesis), handles editorial tasks such as copy editing The Hematologist and article writing for ASH News Daily, and assists with other Communications Department projects and initiatives as needed. The Editorial Specialist will also help the Sr. Managing Editor with measurements of success for ongoing projects and drive ongoing updates and improvements to the ASH News Daily and The Hematologist websites, as well as the aforementioned e-newsletters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Duties that occupy a major portion of time and importance in the job)

  • Manage every aspect of The Hematologist podcast; work with Editor in Chief to develop and maintain a schedule of forthcoming podcast topics based on newsletter content; work with ASH colleagues to develop Society-related podcast topic ideas; perform production-related tasks including posting online, recording of intro and outro, as well as final audio editing.
  • Maintain statistics on podcast listenership; track and report on trends, being prepared to discuss and present to ASH staff as needed.
  • Serve as podcast "czar" leading the evaluation of new podcast ideas throughout ASH, and training other teams within ASH on production-related tasks and specifics as needed.
  • Act as a liaison with the Training Department and provide Communications oversight of Hematopoiesis content strategy and development; edit Hematopoiesis content in preparation for posting to Sitecore.
  • Copyedit articles for ASH News Daily, The Hematologist, and e-newsletters as needed; draft short promotional articles as needed.
  • Manage the design, layout, HTML coding, and distribution of e-mail newsletters ASH NewsLink and Hematopoiesis; maintain statistics on delivery and open rates for e-mail blasts and e-newsletters, track and report on trends, and work with Sr. Managing Editor to drive updates and ongoing improvements as needed.
  • Manage and distribute annual meeting photography schedule, encapsulating photo needs of each ASH department; serve as on-site point of contact for ASH and ASH News Daily photography team at the annual meeting.
  • Assist Managing Editor in preparing materials for meetings and conference calls, including slides and committee notebooks.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED (Minimum education and experience needed to perform the job adequately)

  • College degree. A minimum of three year's work experience.
  • Strong writing, proofreading, editing, and organizational skills required.
  • Experience with desktop audio editing software (e.g., Audacity) preferred.
  • HTML coding preferred.
  • Must have attention to detail and be able to handle multiple tasks in an active work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including professionalism and ability to work well with the ASH leadership required.
