HDR is looking for an experienced Geologist to join Power Generation Group in Charlotte-NC or Charleston-SC. Our Power Generation Group provides engineering consulting services to electric utilities and independent power producers located across the U.S. This individual will be expected to lead and support a variety of projects involving design and construction of dam safety modifications, feasibility studies for new hydropower projects, and geological engineering support for other power generation facilities. Professional Geologists with experience and qualifications comparable to those described below are encouraged to apply. This individual will work with a multi-discipline group of engineers and technicians providing engineering services to the power generation industry. Typical projects involve field investigations to determine subsurface conditions, performing geological engineering portions of dam safety and stability evaluations, design of dam safety modifications, construction support, geological engineering support for feasibility studies for new hydropower projects. On a day-to-day basis, they will be expected to:

  • Organize, conduct, coordinate or manage geological/geotechnical investigations for hydropower and other projects

  • Conduct geological mapping, data interpretation, and preparation of drawings or models depicting site geological conditions

  • Perform geological and geotechnical analyses including seepage analyses, slope stability analyses, tunnel stress and stability analyses, rock block stability analyses and to provide recommendations regarding design of measures necessary to address conditions determined from the analyses

  • Prepare technical reports documenting work performed by direct reports

  • Provide oversight and support of construction activities

  • Function as a Technical Specialist or Project Manager on mid-size projects

  • Supervise and mentor a small staff of professionals and technicians as needed

  • Participate in marketing efforts of both internal and external clients

  • Perform other duties as needed

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BS degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or related technical discipline from an ABET accredited university
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience including experience with geological/geotechnical site characterization for heavy civil projects required (candidates who exceed the minimum experience are encouraged to apply)
  • Must be proficient in the use of standard PC software: Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook
  • Must have familiarity with geological/geotechnical engineering software for the presentation and evaluation of site geological and geotechnical data, rock and soil slope stability evaluations, seepage analyses, rock block stability analyses
  • Familiarity with CADD software such as AutoCAD, Microstation, or similar programs is a must
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others is a must
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required
  • Strong organizational skills required
  • Attention to detail, self-directed learning, meeting deadlines, and multi-tasking are also required
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS degree in related discipline preferred
  • PG license preferred
  • Experience planning and executing geological and geotechnical investigation programs for heavy civil design and construction projects
  • Experience with dam safety evaluations for dam and hydropower projects owned or regulated by the FERC, Bureau of Reclamation, Corps of Engineers, TVA
  • Experience with tunnel and cavern design and inspections
  • Experience with measurement and interpretation of insitu stresses in rock
  • Experience with preparation of feasibility studies for new hydroelectric facilities
  • Previous employment with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm supporting electrical power generation clients
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, previous team coordination and project management experience
  • Local candidates are preferred
