POSITION SUMMARY

TRC Companies, Inc., is seekingProtected Species Field Monitoring Specialist to join our Permitting, Planning and Licensing practice. This positionwill work under the direction of project managers and task leaders in the performance of required field biological surveys and studies, and in-office report writing and other documentation and report to the San Juan, PR Office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS

  • Perform field surveys to identify and map wetlands, streams, and habitat for protected species of wildlife.
  • Preparation of technical reports and compliance statements documenting results of field surveys.
  • Review and understand the scope, schedule, and budget of work to be completed.
  • Monitor project sites for natural resources and erosion control conditions and compliance with regulations.
  • Coordinate activities and work products with other staff resources, as needed.
  • Prepare field data forms, assist in preparation of reports. Field work/travel is expected to comprise 50% to 75% of the job.
  • Candidates should be healthy and able to perform moderate and strenuous fieldwork involving carrying field equipment, hiking in remote locations, operation of global positioning system equipment, etc.
  • Candidates should also be able to work long hours in the field, up to 10 or more hours in unusual circumstances.
  • Applicants will work on project teams in the performance of scientific studies to support our clients' energy and infrastructure development projects (e.g., electric transmission and distribution systems, renewable energy, other industrial/commercial development).
  • The position will require local/regional travel and the ability to conduct site visits and/or attend client meetings. While not in the field, opportunities exist to assist TRC's technical staff in other disciplines including land use planning, environmental permitting, and regulatory compliance, among others.

Job Requirements:

  • Hold a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Management, Botany, Zoology, or closely related field.
  • Basic familiarity with conducting wetland delineations and the flora and fauna of Puerto Rico. The successful candidates will have the ability to identify dominant plant species and describe plant communities and habitats.
  • Possess field biology and report writing experience. The successful candidate should have basic or moderate experience in biological surveys and methodologies, including those conducted in accordance with the Section 404 of the Clean Water Act (i.e., "wetlands") protocols.
  • Possess effective English and Spanish verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate will interact with clients, construction personnel, other resource professionals, and TRC personnel, necessitating strong interpersonal communication competencies. The successful candidates will also be expected to effectively document field data, provide interpretations, and present conclusions in written reports, memos, and emails; therefore, strong technical/scientific report writing is an absolute must and writing samples will be requested.
  • Have strong organizational skills. The successful candidates will be effective in planning and managing his/her work activities, successfully operating within defined scopes of work, budgeted labor hours and schedules.
  • Able to work outdoors conducting biological fieldwork in remote areas and extreme weather conditions. The successful candidate must be comfortable using and operating field equipment such as handheld Trimble GPS unit, 4WD vehicles, digital camera, etc.
  • Able to travel regionally and work for periods of time away from home. While the position is based in the San Juan office location, projects associated with the position could be located throughout Puerto Rico.
  • Desire to learn and assist in other disciplines a must. Looking for team players can provide assistance on a wide variety of projects which in turn helps diversify the individual's background and capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office suite).
  • Possess a valid driver's license and driving record acceptable to TRC's insurance carrier.
  • Abide by Company policies and procedures.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Natural Resources/Biological Sciences College Degree (Bachelor's Degree is a minimum requirement).
  • Must be able to drive an automobile legally and safely.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (Spanish: spoken required, and written fluency preferred).
  • Ability to work regular and sometimes long hours outside, working in the natural environment.
  • Willingness to work dependably, and an eagerness to learn about natural resources impact assessment, planning, and monitoring.
