Schedule: Our regular business hours are Monday - Friday 8:00am -4:30pm. You will be expected to be a consistent presence for meetings, teams and availability as discussed with your supervisor. In-person presence and expected remote availability schedule will be outlined in your first 3 weeks

The People Concern is one of Los Angeles County's largest non-profit housing and social service agencies. SUMMARY

The Director of Communications will develop and oversee the implementation of robust communications and community engagement strategies to build support and broaden awareness of The People Concern and its work. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer this position will lead the External Affairs and Communications team to oversee external communications, branding, and media relations in order to establish The People Concern as the preeminent, most innovative organization with a solution to ending homelessness in LA. The Director will work closely with Development colleagues including the Director of Relationships, Community and Corporate Relations Manager, and Director of Public Policy and Advocacy, as well as providing support and direction to the CEO and Executive Leadership to identify, assess, and arrange participation in both Public speaking and media opportunities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Create and manage the implementation of a cohesive communications and engagement strategy that will enhance the agency's support, reputation, brand awareness and position within the marketplace and the general public, and facilitate external communications
  2. Build measurable brand awareness by revamping digital marketing efforts, including developing a social media marketing strategy across all channels to drive engagement and support, as well as designing an engaging virtual event strategy
  3. Cultivate and manage strategic partnerships and campaigns that lend themselves to cross-promotion; allow for exposure to new audiences/prospects; and/or strengthen our position as a thought-leader on policy and as an advocate for our most vulnerable neighbors
  4. Manage the design, printing and delivery process of all agency collateral
  5. Partner with the Relationships team to support private fundraising and relationship-building goals by crafting a comprehensive communications calendar that includes both on-going (e-touchpoint, etc.) and recurring materials (appeals, etc.) as well as new initiatives to broaden our reach and strengthen our position
  6. Spearhead innovative campaigns and events in close collaboration with internal departments and external partners
  7. Support partnerships with housing developers by managing the creation of marketing materials publicizing permanent supportive housing creation for people experiencing homelessness
  8. Elevate The People Concern as the preeminent, most innovative organization with a solution to ending homelessness through storytelling and engagement/event opportunities
    1. Oversee the launch and management of content creation for storytelling campaigns on an on-going basis
    2. Ensure representation at key community events and serve as the agency representative at external meetings;
    3. In close collaboration with Executive Leadership Team, ensure agency representation in initiatives that have community engagement overlays
  9. Strengthen the agency's thought-leadership role by identifying strategic speaking engagement opportunities for Executive Leadership; managing press inquiries/opportunities; updating housedhealthysafe.com and building out the blog on the agency website
  10. Keep informed of developments in the fields of philanthropy, marketing and communications, nonprofit management and governance, as well as homelessness, mental health, housing and domestic violence services and use this information to help agency operate with initiative and innovation within the marketing and communications field
  11. Attend donor/volunteer engagement, press, and community events as needed
  12. Build infrastructure for the department and establish processes and protocols in collaboration with other team members, including tracking engagement and marketing/PR metrics
  13. Support, train, coach and empower team members with a relationships-growth mindset and maintain an effective team, rooted in a deep commitment to the people we serve

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum five years' demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in the design and execution of marketing, communications, and public relations activities
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated successful experience writing press releases, making presentations, and negotiating with media
  • Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications
  • Solid knowledge and comfort with social media tools and best practices
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time
  • Dedication to a donor-centered philosophy
  • Valid CA Driver's license, reliable car, auto insurance, and an acceptable driving record
