Job Description

Summary/Objective:

Albemarle Corporation is looking for an experienced electrical engineer to work as part of our Global Project Services group to provide engineering services at our domestic and international sites. The candidate will also have significant experience in power systems, power studies, grounding and lightning protection. The candidate will provide electrical design guidance on new and existing electrical power installations relevant to code and corporate requirements, along with serving as an interface between the global project engineering team and the project sites.

This position will work with internal and external resources on project design teams to take a project from early concept to final installation. Designs will ensure that the final electrical installation will be safe, reliable, operable, economical, and environmentally sound. This position will work independently and will be expected to manage multiple projects of various sizes.

The location of this position is at the Houston (Clear Lake) or Charlotte office. Expected travel can be up to 25% and will be primarily short duration trips to gather information needed for design, review third party engineering, manufacturer visits or to inspect construction.


The candidate is fluent in English, with Spanish as a plus.

Job Tasks

  • Works and effectively communicates with a project managerand team of engineers of differing disciplines to execute assigned projects

  • Verifies the accuracy of plant documentation and modifies that documentation as needed during conceptual design development

  • Develops and documents the design basis, material equipment lists, drawing modifications, and estimated cost for installation of the electrical portion of the conceptual and front-end engineering designs for capital projects that will be used to obtain funding and project approval

  • Sets strategy and determine resources required to define and engineer the electrical power distribution systems and components necessary to meet project requirements and specifications.

  • Works with ETAP power models and verifies that the electrical installation being designed will meet short circuit, incident energy, and protective device coordination meet the parameters set forth for each plant site

  • Execute and or lead the electrical design efforts including development or revisions to electrical area classification drawings, single line diagrams, substation and motor control center design, specifications and purchase of electrical equipment, creation of wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and design of lighting and grounding systems.

  • Ensures the accuracy of design information whether done by Albemarle personnel or by outside contractors prior to being issued for construction

  • Provides assistance in overseeing construction efforts as it pertains to electrical design and assists with any troubleshooting or problems solving required to meet installation deadlines

  • Verifies drawings and design details of existing facility are up to date and all field modifications made during construction are accurately documented and released back to the customer in a timely manner.

  • Travels to project sites as needed to support project scope development, construction, testing, and start up. Short to extended stays may be needed depending upon complexity of the installation.

  • Ensures that all labeling and PSSR requirements are complete and accurate prior to the final project turnover to the customer.

  • Communicates directly with outside vendors to specify, obtains quotes, and follow up on purchases of electrical equipment and services.

  • Occasionally provides technical support for troubleshooting, problem solving, and failure analysis related to electrical installation failures at Albemarle Corporation facilities.

  • Interfaces frequently with SAP to enter purchase requisitions, weekly time sheets, and input project information.

  • Maintains constant vigilance for personal and surrounding worker safety, communicates unsafe conditions immediately, and provides direction as needed to ensure construction and design are performed in a safe and injury free manner during performance of daily tasks.

  • Reviews and revises engineering specifications and standards as required by supervision or as needed to ensure compliance with industry and regulatory requirements

  • Develops project tools and engineering guidelines as required that will be used to standardize engineering design parameters and processes

  • Organizes and / or performs presentations on industry best practices and safety topics on a regular basis.

  • Design packages comply with Albemarle specifications, applicable regulatory requirements, and best practices for operation in an industrial chemical plant.

  • Effective communication and interaction with team members, internal customers, and external suppliers.

  • Regular and efficient communication with supervision on project progress, changes in scope, and any other relevant issues that may affect completion of assigned tasks

  • Communicates and documents any regulatory, compliance, and or reliability issues which may adversely affect the electrical infrastructure surrounded the assigned areas in which projects are being executed

  • Maintain and expands current knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and best practices through research and training and shares that information with peers and supervision

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.

  • 15+ years of electrical power system engineering in chemical or petrochemical processing plants

  • Significant demonstrated experience performing electrical power system design on projects with TIC budgets in excess of $50,000,000 US

  • Significant demonstrated experience with electrical power systems up to 110 kV (including selection, calculations, specification, procurement, wiring design for construction packages, commissioning, startup, and maintenance)

  • Significant demonstrated knowledge of electrical distribution systems 400 volts and greater

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer is a plus

  • Demonstrated knowledge of instrument and controls systems is a plus

  • Working knowledge of Chile electrical regulatory codes and regulations is a plus

  • Working knowledge of China electrical regulatory codes and regulations is a plus

  • Minimum of 5 years working as electrical discipline engineer or an electrical lead in a petrochemical or industrial manufacturing environment with progressive demonstration of experience on executing large capital projects. Global experience is a plus.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a direct hire for a petrochemical company or industrial manufacturing environment

  • Demonstrated knowledge of NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety requirements), NESC and OSHA requirement compliance

  • Demonstrated ability to specify and purchasing of electrical equipment and services for projects in excess of $500,000

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the ability to read, understand, and modify or develop electrical documentation needed to communicate scope for electrical projects

  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical area classification requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with ETAP electrical modeling software as it relates to incident energy, short circuit ratings, and protective device coordination, along with IEEE 1584

  • Demonstrated knowledge with IEEE, NFPA, NEMA and other electrical standards, as it relates to equipment purchases and installations

  • Experience with 50 Hz systems and IEC is a plus

  • Working knowledge of electrical equipment acceptance testing as it relates to NETA standards

  • Demonstrated ability working with electrical heat tracing installations, sizing motors, developing fuse and / or circuit breaker trip settings, sizing power cables, sizing transformers, and sizing cable tray

  • Working knowledge of SAP

  • Ability to perform design in AutoCAD is a plus

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must be detail oriented and possess excellent-follow up skills.

  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Effective at working with other staff members and plant personnel in a fast-paced environment.

  • Up to 25% travel in the US with possible international travel with short to extended duration stays possible based on the project deadlines and execution strategy

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders
