Reporting to the Assoc. Director, Development Finance, the Sr. Financial Analyst, Development Finance will be a key business partner to the Development R&D functions and will have high visibility to leadership. The role will focus on forecasting, modeling, and financial close activities. This position will serve as a primary Finance contact support resource for all R&D activities as well as conduit to Finance leadership. This role will also have accountability to provide the Accounting team with analytical review and reporting in support of key accruals related to on-going Clinical Development activities. The role will also have a broad impact and accountability across the organization by supporting the development of the annual budget, financial forecasting, decision support and participation in enterprise-wide projects and initiatives, as required.


Required Skills

This role encompasses a full range of corporate planning activities in the R&D area. This person will business partner with R&D functions to develop, execute, and measure a plan that is aligned with Akebia's business strategy. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Partner with the business leaders across key functions, providing robust monthly and quarterly senior-level financial performance reporting
  • Clearly communicate a cohesive and concise story around the business drivers behind financial data and implications on current and future results.
  • Evaluate and assess key operational issues, risks and business drivers pertaining to budget, actual results, and forecast updates. Suggesting solutions and alternatives, as needed, to drive operational efficiencies, cost saving opportunities, capital expenditure decisions, etc.
  • Key contributor to the monthly forecasting processes, ensuring accuracy and support for assumptions used and data presented
  • Proactive involvement in budgeting and planning process, including headcount planning and implementing appropriate review process
  • Support and contribute to month-end close/reporting activities and variance analytics including accrual activities
  • Collaborate with Finance team to continually review month-end reporting and other departmental processes, ensuring that management information is generated in a timely manner and to the highest standards of quality and accuracy
  • Assist in the analysis of financial and operational results versus forecast and budget for assigned areas of responsibility, investigations of significant variances, and communication of findings to key stakeholders.
  • Responds to various ad hoc queries from internal customers
  • Support internal and external financial and management reporting
  • Develop deep understanding of financial planning and ERP systems to enable and build reporting to support forecasting, close and variance analysis
  • Drive process improvements and enhance data transparency across financial planning

Required Experience

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration
  • 2+ years of Financial Planning & Analysis or Accounting experience
  • At least 1 year in Pharma/Biotech Industry
  • Experience in Clinical Trials/Finance R&D

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with MS Excel, PowerPoint and other typical software
  • Experience with ERP and financial planning systems
  • Experience working in a Sarbanes-Oxley compliant environment
  • Experience developing financial analysis in support of biopharmaceutical business program
  • Demonstrated strong collaboration skills to establish key partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to analyze and report complex information and synthesize to essential elements for clear understanding and presentation to key stakeholders.
  • Possess excellent analytical, communication, decision making, organizational and interpersonal skills
