The ASPCA's Community Medicine (CM) team provides expert veterinary care to support the welfare of animals and their people through our stationary and mobile veterinary clinics, serving the most underserved communities in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. We help pet owners overcome barriers to care, bringing quality services directly to the communities that need us most and partially or fully subsidizing the cost of basic and preventive care. What you'll do:

The Senior Veterinary Assistant (SVA) - Mobile Veterinary Services (MVS) is a vital member of our veterinary medical team. The SVA-MVS supports two program functions - mobile spay/neuter surgery and mobile primary pet care - for pet cats and dogs at various locations throughout Los Angeles County. The SVA drives the clinic from our Paramount logistics center to each clinic location to meet the rest of the medical team. Throughout the day, SVAs are responsible for client communication, assisting the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician, animal handling, preparing animals for surgery, entering medical records and monitoring patients while they are under anesthesia. After discharge, the SVA and RVT cleans and restocks the mobile clinic and drives it back to Paramount so it is ready to go the following day.

Responsibilities:

Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Medical (60%)

• Provide excellent patient care in all peri-operative phases
• Care for up to 25-35 cats and dogs per day in our mobile clinics
• Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques during various procedures (examples: exams, treatments, injections, venipuncture, intubation)
• Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients in pre-operative, operative, and post-operative phases
• Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental Standard Operating Procedures
• Take direction regarding medical protocols and animal care from the clinic veterinarian or veterinary technician
• Organize and maintain pre-operative area and operating room for patient anesthesia, surgical preparation, and sterilization
• Ensure anesthesia machines, pulse oximeters, scales, and other equipment are functional. When equipment is not working properly, report to Medical Staff Managers and Field Lot Coordinator
• Clean, sonicate, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments
• Clean and disinfect endotracheal tubes
• Clean and disinfect kennels, transport carriers, equipment, and facility while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment
• Spot clean operating room, kennels, counters, and floors throughout day
• Work as a team to provide veterinary care for up to 30 animals per day
• Fill in to perform SVA duties at the South Los Angeles spay/neuter clinic as needed, caring for up to 60-70 dogs, cats and rabbits per day

Customer Service (30%)

• Use a non-judgmental, client-centered approach so clients feel at ease about communicating their pet care needs
• Greet clients at PPC Clinics and/or SN clinics and assist with intake process, including assisting clients in filling out intake and service documents; flag relevant medical history to help facilitate continuity of care
• Communicate in effective and professional manner with public, rescue clients, fosters and all ASPCA staff members
• Explain information provided by the Veterinarian about an animal's condition to clients
• Actively promote spay/neuter in the community
• Represent ASPCA in professional and courteous manner
• Provide medical information and representation to other ASPCA departments

Other (10%)

• Drive and safely park mobile clinics to and from various locations in the greater Los Angeles area
• Operate and troubleshoot mobile clinic generators
• Collaborate and foster good communication with ASPCA colleagues
• Adhere to all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT)
• Attend staff meetings and training sessions
• Perform other duties as assigned

Additional Information:

This is a full-time position, 10 hours per day (including driving time), 4 days per week. One weekend day (Saturday) is required. This position will require flexibility to work in our Stationary clinic and overtime as needed.

This position is based in a 37' mobile vehicle (training provided by the ASPCA that will be in driven by the person in this role from our Field Lot in Paramount to different locations in the greater Los Angeles area, in conjunction with the needs of the community.

Compensation and Benefits:

Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary range for this role is set forth below and may be modified in the future.

The target hiring range for this role is $23.85 - $25.29

Qualifications:
