Travel Trainer-Technical Specialist - Florida

Alfred Benesch & Company (Benesch) is looking to hire a part-time Travel Trainer for Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) bus services. The primary purpose of the Travel Trainer is to teach older adults and people with disabilities to travel safely and independently within Pinellas County by using pedestrian skills and public transportation, and to record observations and give feedback to the travel training project manager. Travel training sessions will be conducted one-on-one or in small groups.

The Impact You Will Have:
  • Assess trainees by interviewing and observing skills and behaviors related to travel.
  • Plan and evaluate routes for the trainee.
  • Evaluate the trainee's ability to travel safely and independently.
  • Create and maintain reports including assessment and summary reports.
  • Schedule times for instruction.
  • Communicate with families and support personnel.
  • Teach self-advocacy skills in relation to travel, orientation skills, how to travel routes within the community, safe and independent pedestrian skills, transit skills, and strategies to use when lost or confused while traveling.
  • Assist with workshops and presentations explaining travel instruction.
What We Are Looking For:
  • Excellent oral, written, and computer communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • To be well-organized and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to motivate and impart practical skills.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
  • Ability to assess individual's needs and report back.
  • Experience using Google Maps, or other navigation apps, MS Word/Excel, and email.

  • A good sense of humor and limitless patience.
  • Understanding of PSTA's bus system and/or general transit knowledge, preferred
  • Experience working with older adults and persons with disabilities, preferred
  • Experience in delivering training, preferred
  • Easter Seals Travel Trainer Certification (will reimburse for training with minimum time commitment)
Working Conditions:
  • Anticipated hours per week: 10-20 hours
  • Each assignment must be mutually agreed by both parties.
  • Willing to meet trainees where they are comfortable, including at their home in any neighborhood in Pinellas County.
  • Willing to wait outdoors at bus stops throughout Pinellas County.

Travel Trainers will have to undergo one day of field training (paid) before working with travel trainees.

This is an hourly, on-call position and does not include benefits. Travel Trainers must be available during standard work hours and be flexible to meet the availability of trainees. Travel Trainers will be given a cell phone and an email address to communicate with Benesch staff, PSTA staff, and trainees, and will be provided with the resources to print and copy any documents and materials related to the nature of the position.
