SUMMARY

Responsible for coordinating training resources; scheduling and teaching both credential-producing as well as continuing education for Paramedics. AEMT,EMTs, EMRs and laypersons from the community.

Duties include: assisting in completing required paperwork and filing with the PA Department of Health, Bureau of EMS to ensure compliance with all PA DOH Educational SOP requirements; coordinating and taking an active role in Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance programs; and overseeing the Field Training Program (Preceptors, Clinical Sites and Ride Sites).

The EMS Training Assistant will provide training support for all EMS Training Institute programs.

Training support activities include equipment inventory, maintenance and accountability; coordination of classrooms and facilities for classes; and ensuring that appropriate instructor resources are aligned with training activities. They will serve as first-line point of contact for EMS Training Institute course

Coordinators and instructors requiring assistance/support.

This individual may be required to work non-traditional schedules, including evenings and/or weekends as needed. Work requires limited supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports and facilitates EMS certification programs and continuing education modules for Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians.
  • Coordinates or conducts recurring or one-time sessions on applicable EMS educational topics. Organizes information and develops related training presentations.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of training by working with the EMS Training Institute Medical Director/Associate Medical Director in preparing and administering module exams for students.
  • Performs quality reviews and audits on FISDAP clinical tracking system originating from student lab, field and clinical experiences.
  • Supervises and oversees the Field Training Officer/EMS Preceptor Program: provides initial FTO/Preceptor training; coordinates FTO/Preceptor Program for newly-appointed preceptor candidates; and identifies remedial, refresher or update training for current preceptors, as required.
  • Coordinates clinical and field experiences (a.k.a. - "ride along") with field personnel to ensure the proper educational progression on their medical skills and procedures.
  • Reviews the EMS Training Institute Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the EMS Division and suggests revisions as needed.
  • Coordinates, maintains and ensures all certification course paperwork has been accomplished by students in each certification program and submitted in accordance with PA DOH, BEMS educational SOP.
  • Coordinates and facilitates continuing education (CE) programs/modules for Paramedics/EMTs.
  • Ensures that all EMS Training Institute Paramedic and EMT courses strictly comply with nationally recognized accreditation standards including:

The American Heart Association (AHA)

Committee on Accreditation of EMS Programs (CoAEMSP)

Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP)

International Board of Specialty Cerfification (IBSC)

The PA Dept. of Health Bureau of EMS

National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT)

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Directly supervises and oversees the Field Training Officer (FTO)/Preceptor program. Reports, initiates and assists with educational program quality improvement and accreditation compliance issues. Assists in developing EMS Training Institute budget and conducts maintenance, inventory and accountability of EMS Training Institute equipment.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. PA Department of Health Certified Paramedic (EMTs will be considered on a case-by-case basis)

  2. PA Department of Heath Certified EMS Instructor/Skill Examiner status

  3. PA Department of Health Services EMS Vehicle Operator (EMSVO) certification

  4. Instructor certification in AHA CPR, NAEMT (PHTLS)

  5. Five-years' experience as an active paramedic (EMTs considered on a case-by-case basis)

  6. Four years of teaching, training and/or EMS education program coordinator experience

  7. Possess a valid PA class C driver's license

Equivalent combination of education, certifications and experience may be considered in meeting the above requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequent reaching, sitting, standing, walking, talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, and manual dexterity. Occasional lifting and carrying of over 100 pounds. Work is typically performed in both standard office and outdoor environments.

This position requires availability 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This is an Essential Employee position. Essential employees are obligated to report to work as scheduled or remain at work during emergencies. Following is the Duty Statement for Essential Employees:

"Carries out essential job functions or assigned emergency duties which may involve assignments within the Emergency Operations Center, deployment to a field location to participate in emergency management activities, or other duties as required during periods of emergency. If received, emergency assignments may be performed under adverse conditions and continue for periods ranging from a few hours to several weeks."

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Must pass pre-employment drug test.

Must pass background/criminal history check (Federal Fingerprint, PA State Police, PA Child

Abuse Clearance every 5 years)

Must pass motor vehicle records check.

Must begin training to obtain PEMA Emergency Management Certification within 180 days of hire.

Must maintain active status as an instructor for AHA CPR, First Aid & AED

Must maintain active status as an instructor for PA Dept. of Health EMS

Must maintain active status as an EMS provider in the Commonwealth of PA
