HDR is looking for a Hydro-Mechanical Engineering Team Leader to join our nationally ranked Hydropower practice in Charlotte, NC. Our Hydropower practice provides engineering consulting services to electric utilities and independent power producers located across the U.S. The Team Leader will lead and manage our Charlotte hydro-mechanical engineering team supporting a variety of projects involving feasibility studies for new pumped storage hydropower projects, hydropower turbine modifications and upgrades, and mechanical balance of plant upgrades at existing hydropower facilities. They will also be expected to manage and execute project work. On a day-to-day basis, they'll also be expected to:

  • Take responsibility for operations of the Charlotte Hydro-Mechanical section including staff development, profitability, morale, quality control and marketing support
  • Function as a Project Manager and take responsibility for engineering work on projects in addition to management responsibilities
  • Take administrative responsibility for section staff and technical service functions, and lead and coordinate services with other sections
  • Be involved in marketing planning, proposals, and interviews
  • Be directly involved with clients in marketing, project execution and related issues
  • See that all work is planned, organized, controlled and evaluated through proactive project management system
  • Implement, monitor and support company policy
  • Select, train, develop and manage technical personnel
  • Manage and develop multidiscipline teams
  • Work cooperatively with National Directors and marketing staff in local and national marketing and production efforts
  • Produce mechanical system designs including P&IDs, equipment sizing, detailed design, and system calculations
  • Prepare equipment and design specifications
  • Perform equipment and contractor bid evaluations
  • Perform site inspections which may require confined space entry
  • Provide field support during installation, testing and start-up
  • Support Pumped Storage Concept Studies, Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility Studies
  • Coordinate workload through the entire project development to complete documents on schedule
  • Track financial aspects of projects, and coordinate/adjust work efforts with the project team to ensure that the work is completed within the parameters of the agreed-upon budget and schedule
  • Participate with the Regional Controller and Regional Director in project reviews with corporate management as needed

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or related discipline from an ABET accredited university
  • PE license required
  • Minimum of 11 years of relevant experience including experience in design and operational support of electrical generation stations
  • Experience with preparing procurement and design specifications for new installations as well as upgrade/replacement of existing equipment
  • Experience with design of power station mechanical systems (ie cooling water, lube oil, governor hydraulics, compressed air, HVAC)
  • Previous experience with the design and installation of mechanical system/component upgrades for existing hydroelectric generating stations
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook
  • Familiarity with CADD software such as AutoCAD, Microstation, or similar programs
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Attention to detail, self-directed learning, meeting deadlines, and multi-tasking are also required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with preparation of feasibility studies for new pumped storage hydroelectric facilities
  • Experience with the design, manufacture, testing and operation of hydroelectric generating station mechanical equipment including turbines, pump-turbines, pumps, valves, compressors, and other mechanical components
  • Previous employment with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm supporting electrical power generation clients
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, previous team coordination and project management experience
  • Ability to serve/previous experience in Project Lead Engineer role for Mechanical Engineering Discipline
  • Experience with NavisWorks, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Revit, and/or other 3D-database driven design processes
  • Experience with Microsoft Project or Primavera
  • Desire to lead teams as a Project Manager or Team Leader
  • Local candidates are preferred
