The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Biotechnical Engineering. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure track position in the College of Engineering and the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences that includes an appointment in the California Agricultural Experiment Station
(AES). Faculty members who hold AES appointments have a responsibility to conduct mission- relevant research and outreach that include fundamental and applied research for the purposes of developing new knowledge and technologies addressing specific problems of importance to the people of California, and dissemination of knowledge and technology with a focus on agricultural, environmental, and societal issues related to agricultural and natural resource systems. Participation in outreach programs and performance of University, professional, and public service are also expected.
This position will apply modern biotechnology and develop novel bioengineering approaches to address global challenges such as climate change, food supply, environmental protection, and human and animal health and nutrition. The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded fundamental and applied research program in agricultural, food or industrial biotechnology, applying leading-edge tools and techniques of molecular biology and synthetic biology such as genetic engineering, protein engineering, directed evolution, gene editing and next generation sequencing.
Possible research areas include, but are not limited to, manipulation of plant, animal, microbial or cell- free systems in the development of novel biocatalysts, biosensors, biochemicals, and biomaterials.
The appointee will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in biotechnical engineering and technology, in addition to other courses in the Biological Systems Engineering (EBS) major and in a new major in Agricultural and Environmental Technology (TAE). The appointee will be expected to develop new courses in biotechnical engineering related subjects at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Other specific teaching assignments will depend on the academic background of the appointee, and would typically include courses among EBS 1 (Foundations of Biological Systems Engineering), EBS 125 (Heat Transfer in Biological Systems), EBS 127 (Mass Transfer and Kinetics in Biological Systems), EBS 130 (Modeling of Dynamic Processes in Biological Systems), EBS 161 (Kinetics and Bioreactor Design), EBS 170 (Biological Systems Engineering Design), EBS 265 (Design and Analysis of Engineering Experiments) and EBS 270 (Modeling and Analysis of Biological Systems). Undergraduate and graduate student mentoring will be expected. Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. Collaboration is also expected with other faculty across the University, Cooperative Extension specialists and advisors, partners in allied industries or other appropriate public stakeholders.
