Job Description

DEA's national Bridge Inspection and Preservation Group is seeking a Bridge Engineer-in-Training to support transportation and transit related projects. A successful candidate will have limited experience with bridge inspection and bridge load ratings and a knowledge of LRFD bridge design and LRFR bridge load rating practices. In this role you will perform tasks and procedures necessary to execute bridge and tunnel inspections. You will also perform structural analyses and develop calculations using the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation and other codes for structural load ratings. You will also perform structural analyses and develop design calculations using AASHTO and other design codes for different bridge, transportation and transit structural systems. Typical projects will include bridge inspections and load ratings for a variety of timber, concrete, and steel bridges. Other projects may include retaining wall and sound wall design, and bridge rehabilitation and maintenance projects. This position can be in the following offices: Seattle, WA, Tacoma, WA, Olympia, WA, Portland, OR, Salem, OR.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Organize information for use in project documents
  • Assist with the development of bridge load rating calculations
  • Perform condition inspections of existing bridges
  • Generate and edit bridge inspection reports
  • Assist with bridge rehabilitation and maintenance projects
  • Assist with the development of engineering drawing details
  • Assist with bridge projects by creating concept reports, and Type, Size and Location reports
  • Develop engineering quantity and cost estimates
  • Assist with the development of project specifications
  • Review contractor submittals during construction

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree Civil Engineering
  • 0-4 years of applicable bridge engineering experience, to include analysis, design, inspection, and/or construction
  • Licensed Engineer-in-Training (EIT) required
  • Proficiency in other current structural design software applications, with an emphasis on bridge design software, such as MidasCivil, BRASS, AASHTOWare BrR, CSiBridge, PG Super, Conspan, or LPile
  • Knowledgeable in drafting software applications such as Microstation, AutoCAD or Civil 3D
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with a heavy emphasis on Excel and Word
  • Physically able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to communicate and work in a team-oriented environment
  • Valid driver's license and clear motor vehicle report

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering
  • Knowledge of AASHTO and representative state DOT bridge design and load rating standards
  • Successful completion of NHI 130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service bridges, or NHI-approved equivalent
