Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) Training group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a technical career as a Training Instructor.

Responsibilities Include:

Level 3: Utilizing highly specialized operational and technical knowledge and experience, develop and implement DOE Order and company compliant Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) based facility specific training and qualification programs for ATR Programs. Instruct Operations Support personnel in the theory, operation maintenance of Nuclear Facilities including the Advanced Test Reactor (A TR), Advanced Test Reactor Critical (ATRC) and the Nuclear Material Inspection and Storage Facility (NMIS) in settings that include classroom, on the job training and dynamic learning activities. Takes work direction from and is accountable to the ATR Programs Technical Programs Lead Instructor and ATR Programs Training Manager. These programs are equivalent to both accredited and non-accredited training programs in the commercial nuclear power industry.

Level 4: In addition to specific programmatic support outlined above, routinely functions as a lead, coordinating and managing the activities of other staff. Recognized as subject matter expert in areas of responsibility. Improves organizational efficiency through process improvements. Uses innovative approaches to develop solutions to complex problems within established policy. Decisions primarily affect complex projects or organizational initiatives. Errors could negatively impact business or project goals at a directorate level. Serves as spokesperson for the organization on major matters pertaining to its policies, plans, and objectives. Skilled at establishing positive working relationships at all levels, both internal and external. Demonstrates the ability to effectively influence relationships. Functions as a team lead and gives direction to other specialists and/or non-exempt staff. Proactively identifies, promotes and develops plans for new project opportunities. Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches of assignment. Completed work is reviewed for desired results. Identifies opportunities and risks and makes recommendations affecting organizational or Laboratory strategy. Recommends practices for the organization. Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and prioritizing assignments.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Level 3: Bachelors plus 5 years relevant experience or an Advanced Degree & 3 years OR 13 years education/experience equivalency in lieu of bachelors.
  • Level 4: Bachelors plus 8 years relevant experience or an Advanced degree & 6 years OR 16 years education/experience equivalency in lieu of bachelors.
  • Experience and education equipping the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Must meet the requirements of DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Qualification, and Training Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities:

  1. Experience must be consistent with material being presented.
  2. Instructors must have demonstrated knowledge of instructional techniques through training or experience and be qualified by the training manager (or equivalent) for the material being presented.
  3. Instructors who provide instruction on the reactor simulator to certified personnel shall hold, or have held, a senior reactor operator certification for a similar Category A reactor plant (or equivalent), or have been certified on the reactor facility simulator.
  4. Persons who are responsible for instruction of subjects such as technical safety requirements, reactor operating principles and characteristics, and control manipulations shall have received senior reactor operator (or equivalent) training.
  5. Because standalone instruction is provided by SRO (or equivalent) trained instructors for technical safety requirements, instructors can provide instruction on technical safety requirements related to the systems they teach as part of the system or component instruction without having received senior reactor operator (or equivalent) training.
  • US Citizen. Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L security clearance within one year of appointment.
  • Must have demonstrated excellent communication and facilitation skills for interacting with department staff, nuclear facility personnel, and management.
  • Previous qualification at ATR as a Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Operator, Pipe Fitter or Welder is highly desirable.
